'No ethnic barbs being thrown here – hell, this journo has lived outside the States for over 20 years.' You know when you have to state that no ethnic barbs are being thrown, it's because reading what you wrote it's difficult to Extrapolate anything else but that the race of the director is the reason you're upset. Who cares if she is not an U.S citizen, does that mean she didn't watch or doesn't know the show to the level an U.S director would. This argument is just as bad as the Japanese one about Memoirs of a Geisha having a director that wasn't Japanese.

Refering to yourself as a journo 5 times in your article is also very annoying, and a bit pretentious.

I couldn't care less if Jabba the Hutt directed this movie. Dallas was a load of horse crap anyway if you ask me.

The one thing you're right about is that you have a hint you have an issue.

You do. It's racism.

So work your brain out of it.

Comments like this should be rightly recognized and refused print.

So what about the way america (hollywood) steal, copy and ruin numerous non-american films or tv programmes? by changing history so that american audiences find it easy to understand. But this isnt even about that because how does a persons ethnic origin changed the way they can shot a film?

Hey folks,

Let’s ratchet down the comments about racism a bit.

The article was written to air a bit of frustration about Hollywood wasting money on a retro concept that played well on the small screen but may not do so well in a one-off movie.

My comments about Ms. Chadha as director have to do more with the type of films she has directed in the past then the fact that she is British directing a movie about Americans.

‘Bride & Prejudice’ is a Bollywood adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic tale where a mother is eager to find suitable husbands for her four unmarried daughters. It is a romantic comedy with of course music and dancing.

‘Bend it Like Beckham’, again a romantic comedy about a woman’s football (soccer team). Set in West London and Hamburg, the film follows two 18 year olds with their hearts set on a future in professional soccer. But their goals clash with parental desires for the women to hang up their football shoes, find a nice boyfriend, settle down and cook the perfect chapatti.

Ms. Chadha is also working on three other comedies, ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ ‘The Closet’ and a remake of Jae-young Kwak’s super Korean movie ‘My Sassy Girl’ (from Ho-sik Kim’s novel).

Dallas is NOT a comedy (and does not deal with women’s issues like most of her previous work). It is a soap opera about a cunning Texas family set against a particular slice of time in American history.

And by her own admission (see quote in article), Ms. Chandra sees herself making British – Asian films. ‘Dallas’ certainly does not have those particular sensibilities (British-Asian) nor should it. And if it does – then Fox should not be likening it to the TV series.

Can Ms. Chadha switch genres and pull off this movie? – Sure but why would the studio turn to her when there are so many other young directors around foreign or not that might do a better job.

As for my use of “journo” so many times – sorry wrote article quickly and should have limited number of references to myself as writer.

Finally, the fact that Fox would take $ savings over authenticity, shooting in a location that gave it bigger tax breaks than in the original 2nd unit outdoor location in Texas just adds to my particular concern about this film.

But these are my opinions and only that.
