A job, a wife, a baby and no free time. I haven’t seen the films but based on what I’ve heard and know, we’ll see if the movie is worth it. It’s the UNSEEN MOVIE REVIEW.
Is there anyone still on this planet who has not read The Da Vinci Code? Probably the same number of guys who have never seen Pam Anderson naked. I never really understood why Hollywood studios were lining up to pay for the rights to such big books. If everyone has read the book, then everyone knows the ending. And if everyone went to the same restaurant on the same day and all ordered eggs it would be chaos. I don’t know why I mention that except that I really like eggs. History has proven me wrong, as the best sellers usually do great box office business. Things probably won’t be any different for The Da Vinci Code since it stars Tom Hanks and is directed by Ron Howard.
I was very surprised when Ron Howard turned in A Beautiful Mind and very happy to see him win the Oscar for Best Director. In the past I always felt that Ronny was given great material and then turned in a saccharine sweet film (Ransom could have been tougher, The Grinch was syrupy and Backdraft had very few thrills), but I think he really nailed it with A Beautiful Mind. His career is quite similar to Ed Wood’s. Glen or Glenda was bad, but Plan 9 Fro Outer Space really sucked. I’m hoping Ronny does the right thing here and sticks to the tone of the book so things keep moving and remain tense the whole time.
Like most people in America I think Bush is doing a poor job in office and I’ve read The Da Vinci Code. I really enjoyed the premise to the whole thing but I felt like I was going through the same thing over and over again. There was always another code to solve and another clue which lead to another code. I still managed to read the whole book over a weekend, so even with all the codes that had to be deciphered the story still moved so quickly for me that I couldn’t put down the book. Kind of like Mallomars.
The main draw for me with this film is Tom Hanks. Tom has that superstar quality that very few working actors have. He is a great actor and has shown his range in Forrest Gump, Philadelphia and I also thought he was great in The Ladykillers. (I’m still not sure why he made The Terminal or why Spielberg put his name on that one). But more importantly Tom can capture an audience with any film he does. He could probably read the Yellow Pages on film and make it interesting. (Memo to self – pitch Universal new Yellow Pages movie starring Tom Hanks, find John Woo to direct).
So even though I know how the film ends (they didn’t change it, did they?), I’ll pay my ten bucks and hop on board for what I’m hoping will be one hell of a ride.
