A job, a wife, a baby and no free time. I haven’t seen the films but based on what I’ve heard and know, we’ll see if the movie is worth it.
When I was in high school, I knew summer had started in June because I had written my last exam. I knew my girlfriend had broken up with me because her best friend told me during recess. Now I know things have changed a lot since high school, bigger holes in the ozone and my jeans aren’t as tight, but I never knew summer was going to kick off at the beginning of May. Summer movies are being released earlier and earlier and this year is no exception with Mission Impossible 3 opening May 5th (Katie’s original due date if you believe made up tabloid magazines and my mother).
I am very excited for this film, aside from the fact that it will kick off the summer flurry this film is why I love going to the theater, big action popcorn fun with sound so loud it blows my toupee off my head into the lap of the lady behind me. This is the time when the big names like Tom Cruise come out with the big budget films. Now I’m not saying this always holds true but usually if you manage to spend over $100 million dollars on a film there will be something in it that I will be interested in checking out (yes, even The Island had a pretty cool chase scene but then I fell back asleep).
Why is it that the big names in Hollywood, the real A-list stars, usually manage to make pretty decent films? Hanks, Crowe, Washington. It’s because they won’t let the film begin until it’s ready to go. It’s because since they are in the film, they are guaranteed a decent budget. It’s because they can attract quality talent to direct the movie. So how do you get to that point? Well, you have to make a great movie so Hollywood knows you’re an A-list star then they let you make great movies. Reminds me of when I applied to be the fry cook at McDonald’s, how do I get experience if no one is willing to give me experience? You do it by writing for Monsters and Critics. The sad thing is when these guys stop caring and they let the quality slip. Hey Harrison Ford, I’m talking about Firewall and Hollywood Homicide. So say what you will about Tom Cruise, he knows how to make quality movies.
This leads to my next point. I know we live in a time where we crave information about celebrities’ private lives, but then we get upset when we find out how loopy they really are. Remember when we all heard about Robert Downey, Jr. falling asleep in his neighbor’s bedroom? It almost completely ruined all the fine work he did on Saturday Night Live! Do most people jump on Oprah’s couch when talking about Katie Holmes? I don’t really care. I don’t think that will make Mission Impossible 3 a bad movie going experience. Did Woody Allen marry his step daughter and have children with her? Yes, and I find that to be pretty creepy not to mention awkward at Thanksgiving family dinners. But I still thought Match Point was one of the bets films of last year.
But enough about the whos and the whys, let’s get back to MI3. I keep reading interviews where the director, JJ Abrams, keeps saying how he wanted to get into the character of Ethan Hunt and find out about his personal life. This sounds like a lot of artist mumbo jumbo to me but as long as I get to see Tom blasted off his feet sideways into that car by a massive explosion on the big screen in Dolby digital sound I could care less about all the kooky things he may do off screen.
