Valkyrie -
In a country in the grips of evil, in a police state where every move is being watched, in a world where justice and honor have been subverted, a group of men hidden inside the highest reaches of power decide to take action. Tom Cruise stars in the suspense film, VALKYRIE, based on the true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (CRUISE) and the daring and ingenious plot to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known. Director Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS, X-MEN, SUPERMAN RETURNS) re-teams with Academy Award®-winning USUAL SUSPECTS screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie to bring to life the story of the men who led the operation to assassinate Hitler. The film also stars an acclaimed cast including Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Carice van Houten, Thomas Kretschmann, Eddie Izzard, Christian Berkel and Terence Stamp.
A proud military man, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg is a loyal officer who serves his country all the while hoping that someone will find a way to stop Hitler before Europe and Germany are destroyed. Realizing that time is running out, he decides that he must take action himself and joins the German resistance. Armed with a cunning strategy to use Hitler’s own emergency plan – known as Operation Valkyrie – these men plot to assassinate the dictator and overthrow his Nazi government from the inside.
With everything in place, with the future of the world, the fate of millions and the lives of his wife and children hanging in the balance, von Stauffenberg is thrust from being one of many who oppose Hitler to the one who must kill Hitler himself.
VALKYRIE is produced by Bryan Singer, Christopher McQuarrie and Gilbert Adler. McQuarrie co-wrote the original screenplay with Nathan Alexander who also serves as co-producer. The executive producers are Chris Lee, Ken Kamins, Daniel M. Snyder, Dwight C. Schar and Mark Shapiro.
The film was shot in Germany at various locations where many of the actual events occurred, including the historic Bendlerblock. Recreating the atmosphere of urgency and paranoia inside the German resistance is a team that includes Singer’s frequent collaborators Newton Thomas Sigel (SUPERMAN RETURNS, X2, X-MEN) as director of photography and editor/composer John Ottman (SUPERMAN RETURNS, X2); as well as production designers Lilly Kilvert (two-time Oscar®-nominee for THE LAST SAMURAI and LEGENDS OF THE FALL) and Patrick Lumb (THE OMEN) and costume designer Joanna Johnston (MUNICH, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN).

Lady Jackie, I am related to Peter Yorck von Wartenburg, he was a cousin of Stauffenberg, so we are related!!
I don't actually go out to the Cinema.. At least I haven't done so for quite some time.... But concerning this film I will make a special effort ...
It appears to have all of the major elements necessary in making it a clear winner...
I'm also thinking about getting the DVD as well... This should be one those films that stand up to a very detailed study...
I wounder if the DVD will be in the HD or Blue Ray format??? I'm not sure what this studio prefers??
Valkyrie is a fantastic movie. It is informative, inspiring and fascinating. I think it is quite unfair for some critics to mislead the public with negative reviews that are absolutely false. At a time when the world is filled with dictators such as Robert Mugabe, it is inspiring to know that there were people that saw the evil of Hitler and tried to stop it. For me, Valkyrie informed me about historical facts of which I was unaware. I am inspired by the knowledge that some made a spirited effort to stop Hitler. I love the fact that Tom Cruise did this movie; it was not the usual smooth superhero that he plays but a real life human hero with limitations. I loved and enjoyed the movie immensely. I recommend it whole heartedly to anybody who has a brain and a heart. What a fantasatic movie!
Well, I read the reviews and all the statements of 'the movie is good but once Tom enters the scene it ruins it. I just saw the movie halfway expecting to be disappointed.
I was not disappointed in the least. I thought Toms performance was Great. I am not a huge Tom Cruise fan but I do like his work. the movie Looks Great too. even down to using old style glass panes that Drift as the glass did at that time in history. the acting across the board is very good and the pace of the film does a good job at showing how nervous a time this was for all those involved. I thorougly enjoyed the film and thought Tom was Definately not a hinderance but instead a welcomed presence in all scenes. Id like to give a bad grade and a frowny face to all those trying to appear Insightful by attacking his acting in this film.
I am reminded of the reviews of Hunt for Red October ..'the film doesnt even have a love enterest'. well it was about a Submarine.
I give it a Big Thumbs Up. Both.
Well it sounds all nice and stuff and it's also pure Hollywood but I hope nobody forgets the fact that Stauffenberg only wanted to end the war in the West but continue the one in the East. He had his own goals concerning the assassination of Hitler. Nothing and nobody is as good as they seem and I find it highly dangerous to glorify Stauffenberg based on a Blockbuster such as Valkyrie. People who went a bit deeper into history kind of know the backgrounds and why Stauffenberg exactly wanted to stop Hitler, e.g. to take his place, not as the same person of course, but who knows what sort of leader he had been.
Had the pleasure so viewing this movie last night, I have studied the German history of 1918 to 1945 all my life and knew in detail what the film was trying to capture.
A lot of viewers are relating it to Downfall this is a error, Downfall is a more claustrophobic movie due to the setting, where's Valkerie due to its wide spread actual history needed condensing and this has been done well for cinema so the average viewer can get an overview of what happened this they suceeded in doing.
Now to Tom Cruise, all I can say is thank you at last you have shown what you are capable of the portrayal of Stauffenburg is excellent and I do wish critics would stop knocking you, who care's what religion you follow, you are an actor to entertain us and your connection with the public when film premiers are on are a credit to you and lots of other actors could take a leaf out of your book.
The mostly English cast support you with solid proformances Bill Nighy being outstanding.
What Valkerie will do is become one of the war movies that future generations will watch.

Hey there... glad to see there are lots of people who liked the movie as much as i did.
@ Max: where the hag did you read that crap about stauffenberg?
I´ve been studying history for 6 years at the Freie Universität Berlin now and am finally writing my master about Stauffenberg.
I´ve read many books, articles and contemporary comments on and about Stauffenberg. If there´s one thing I can assure you is:
Wikipedia is NOT the right source if you want correct information about historical personalities, especially not about german ones.
Try to get some good books about the whole Walküre-plot and you´ll see what I mean.
I may not be related to Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg,
but I know what it means to grow up with the stain on the german history people like him tried to reduce.
