Adapted from Bernard Malamud's novel of the same name the story follows a sole tenant, Henry Lesser (McDermott) who is struggling to finish his first novel. However, his isolation and peace is disturbed when Willie Spearmint (Snoop Dogg), a black writer ambilivalent towards Jews, moves into the building.
Artistic rivalry ensues, complicated by Willie's white girlfriend Irene (Byrne) as well as the landlords attempts to evict them so he can demolish the building.
