The New World -
The New World is an epic adventure set amid the encounter of European and Native American cultures during the founding of the Jamestown Settlement in 1607. Inspired by the legend of John Smith (Colin Farrell) and Pocahontas, acclaimed filmmaker Terrence Malick transforms this classic story into a sweeping exploration of love, loss and discovery, both a celebration and an elegy of the America that was…and the America that was yet to come.
Against a historically accurate Virginia backdrop, Malick has set a dramatized tale of two strong-willed characters-a passionate and noble young native woman and an ambitious soldier of fortune-torn between the undeniable requirements of their civic duty and the inescapable demands of the human heart.
The film features an accomplished cast that includes Christopher Plummer, Christian Bale, August Schellenberg, Wes Studi, David Thewlis, Yorick van Wageningen and newcomer Q’orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas. Behind the camera is an all-star production team that includes director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Sleepy Hollow), production designer Jack Fisk (Mulholland Drive, The Thin Red Line), costume designer Jacqueline West (Quills, Rising Sun) and film editor Richard Chew (Star Wars, Shanghai Noon). The New World is scheduled for a Fall 2005 release.

I thought the production and photography were very good. I had a problem with the continuity. There were to many sharp cuts from one 'mini scene' to another. Also I had a hard time with the dialog-most of which was spoken in whispers. Most of the acting was admirable.Colin Farrell always seemed to have a lot on his mind and that caused his mumbling.Q'Orianka is a lovely young actress, but I would like to think that had the script been written by an Native American she would have been more diffined and less likely to fall so hard for the foreigners-although this is supposed to be part of history.
When she went to England she was very impressed with the wealth of part of
London she was able to see,but we know how disasterous the living conditions for the majority of people living in those times. I'm nit picking!
And then came the rest of the Brits, the French and of course the Spanish.
This was really a romantic film but building a love story around the discovery of The New World leaves us betrayed as to what eventually happened to the millions of Native Americans who had lived in this country for thousands of years. And now we are very pleased to be patriotic Americans.
