The Descent -
In a remote mountain range, six girlfriends meet for their yearly adventure, a caving trip into the arteries of the earth. The group makes their way through the remote cave system, enjoying the hazardous but beautiful surroundings. Then, deep inside the cave, disaster strikes when their route back to the surface is blocked by a rockfall.
When they learn that Juno, always pushing herself that little bit further, has brought them to an unexplored cave, and that no one is coming to rescue them, the group starts to splinter. Left with no other option, they push on through the cave, praying for another exit. The women battle through this harsh underground world, pitting their strength and determination against each new challenge. Unbeknownst to them, there is something else lurking under the earth, a race of monstrous creatures hidden from the light, evolved to live perfectly in the dark.
As the friends realize they have become prey, they are forced to unleash their most primal instincts to face the creatures. As old wounds break open and loyalties disintegrate, the women realize the horrible truth-they have most to fear from one another.

The Descent is their descent into madness.
After watching the movie, I wonder if the cave dwellers actually existed at all because I don't recall them actually killing anyone (eating yes, but that could be in the others minds...)
We know there was jealousy of Juno over Sarah as suggested in the opening chapter that Sarah had begun a life outside the adventurous life with which her relationship with Juno was based, by having a loving husband (?) and daughter waiting for her at the terminus of each expedition. Juno, after being shoved into the frigid waters in front of them, to be pulled out by Sarah's husband, was only like salt in her wounds.
Fast forward one year, and they all convene to enter an uncharted cave and it's not surprising that latent fears/angst/aggressions will play out among the 6 characters.
I like to think of this movie as a psychological thriller and that the cave dwellers don't really exist but rather are apparitions of all their minds, precipitated from latent, unsatisfied desires.
Modern day C.H.U.D. and way better than the 1984 attempt in the sewers of N.Y.
I liked this movie a lot. It's difficult for horor movies to make me jump but this one did several times.
In regards to the above comment though, they did kill at least three of the girls, the first one with the broken leg, Holly had her throat ripped out and maybe had her neck broke at the same time. Towards the end, the girl hanging from the ceiling who managed to stab one had her throat slitt as well. Then right behind Juno the other girl got eaten alive leaving Juno and Sarah.
this was the best movie ever. the 2 people on top.....get a life
The DeScent is an Awsome movie, Thou it made me jump a few times I really enjoyed it, Great adventure movie and gives you the thrill of wondering around in a dark frightening place waiting to see just what is hidden around the next corner...a MUST SEE!
when i saw this movie in the theater it was so good and i couldnt wait for it come out on dvd..to my dissapointment..i bought the wrong dvd..i acidently bought the unrated version and it sucks!!!...the ending that i saw in the theaters was totally different and better...
The Descent was an intense ride even though the ending was not what i had expected. But i think even if she would have escaped would it had really been a happy ending?
I liked the movie alot, which is suprising because I expected this movie to be a 'lets just have 6 hot girls get wet in a cave' movie. It had great back story and the thrills were awesome. Being a climber myself it was quite cool to see some of thrill seekers worst fears come true. I was about to close the book and say it was a great movie, but I have no idea what the hell happened at the end. I still can't quite put together whether or not the girl got out of the cave. I would really dislike it if she was still traped in the cave. However, I bet its just hopeful thinking. Overall: good movie.
I just watched the unrated DVD version last night. Was the theatre version much better? I left the film confused and unsatisfied. Did Juno have an affair with Sarah's husband? What did the key chain signify? What was the end about- Did Sarah get out- Was she dreaming???????
Im a bit confused, I would like to know whether or not she actually made it out? I would also like to say that if the descent in to the cave was really their descent in to madness, then what were the skeletons, the other cave equipment they found, explain that.
They should have explained why the cave dudes were there and more about them
The ending was dissapointing and confusing!! please someone to explain me what really happened.. At first I thought Sarah came out, but then Juno's ghost image... then back to the cave... it made me think.. yes it was a dream and she didn't really scape. So, it would be pretty a disspaointment nobody survived...Juno could have explained Sarah she killed the other girl by accident..
All I know about this movie was that it scared me half to death. And, according to the two people I saw it with and most everyone else who's seen it, it really isn't that scary. Something about this movie just creeped me out. I will never look at Lord of the Rings in the same light again after seeing those cave people things. I AM wondering though - how is the unrated ending different than the theater ending?
There is a quarter mile long cave here in Iowa, much of which must be crawled through. As you get to the end, the air gets thin, and two vains run into pipes much too narrow to try. This moviw reminds one just how clostraphobic a cave like that can make you. I squirmed, man. The added horror of the chuds was - Oh man! When the girl first sees that one, and it's back leg kind of flinches. Creepy stuff! This is a very effective horror film as it is fairly believable - sans, perhaps, the chuds, but noone knows for sure, I guess.
Watch it - You will not be dissappointed if you want a good scare or five.
wow i think it was different because who in the hell would want to go in a cave that wasnt explored before. juno knew and she seemed fine. and after finding the old stuff i wouldnt want to go any farther. the best part was when the lady was looking through the camera and she saw the dweller there. the was frickin scary. when i showed it to my friend he freaked and jumped back in horror. over all is was good.
Oh my God! I just finished watching and am shook up.
oh my god this movie was really good i loved it i was so scared the whole time and thats how scary movies are supposed to be i give this move 2 thumbs up great job A++++
heyy omg
i think i would love ur movie
i havent seen it yet but im going to see it like right now!!
but when im done watching i will tell u guys how good it was alright
piece and i hope its scary n good
So wait the movie ending in the theaters was different, CRAP! I loved this film, now I gotta go out and get the uncut version, but does it still have the blooper reel?
This movie was VERY VERY good, ok (5) died and yes she made it out! My opinion is when she fell and awoke looking at the fire that reminded her of her daughter which caused her to go on and getting the heck out of there.
I don't think she got out, although I watched the DVD version. what is the different ending that was in the theatre. I think she fellthen had a dream sequence in whcih she found her way out, then she sees junos ghost whom she basically helped in killing. Woke up and had a preminision to the fact that she was dying and going off to see her dead daughter, when she smiled at her daughter it was the implication that she was ok with the fact she was dying and would see her daughter soon. The camera then pans out to show that she in is fact no where near getting out and trapped in the middle of nowhere.
We just watched the movie last night and it was fairly good but kind of left me hanging. They throw you the ending you want but then yank it back away! lol... good gore, made me cringe and it was more tasteful than a lot of the horror flicks coming out lately. No random sex scenes, just pure gore & mystery.
Yeah, no doubt, what was up with Juno and the husband? Im sure they suggested an affair but failed to link that to anything.
Worth renting! :)
I saw this movie last night and it was great. One of my favorites.. My type of horror.. They made this movie realistic and i love the fact that these girls fight for their lives the way they did. The ending i watched was her dream and it was okay because it makes it realistic (there is no way out that cave so she is okay with dieing and meeting again with her daughter). Makes you think whether those creatures do exist in the underworld. i also love the part when she gives Juno what she deserves for betraying her. The scenes were graphic and the girls were great actresses. This was a must see movie and great thriller.
Needs an extra 30 min to tie up loose ends!
Ok, here is my take on what actually happened. Juno and what's her names husband were having an affair, that's why he rushed to see if Juno was ok after she got pushed in the water. This is also reinforced by the husband being really distant and in deep thought while driving. Later at the cabin both Juno and the other woman seem to still be really distraught about the husband's death, though Juno tries to hide it.
I don't think that anyone actually made it out of the cave alive. When she fell, she didn't get closer to the exit but rather deeper into the cave. I believe that the creatures were actually descendents of previous explorers who might have slipped into madness and started hunting and eating anything that they could find in order to survive. They probably survived off of other lost explorers and animals, as indicated by some of the animal bones (the crocodile like skull and animal fangs). I think that the last scene shows the main character slipping deeper into madness and starting to become like the creatures (starts crawling and maybe even preparing to hunt them) in order to survive.
i dont get it. at all. someone explain, PLEASE.
I just watched the movie and wow.. I really liked it. I wanna know something... does anyone know where it has been filmed (in which caves)? Cause I gotta go there! Of course, there won't be any monsters :) Thanks.
i thought that the descent was totally wicked!! i loved all the blood and the animations on everyone was very detailed!! i would rate this movie 9 out of 10 and i would recommend this movie to all my friends and i would love to watch this movie on a stormy night with my friends at a sleepover party!! :)
Beth (after being stabbed by Juno) showed Sarah the pendant before asking to be euthanized. The pendent revealed Juno's relationship with Sarah's husband. Later, Sarah showed Juno the pendant before whacking her in the knee.
Also, as discussed in the DVD commentary, none of the cave scenes were shot on location.
Unbelievable! I haven't been scared like that in years. It's hard to find a fullfilling thriller anymore. A little disappointed in the end of the DVD unrated cut, but that is why this movie gets to us. Proven by the many questions and comments on this web page. I know I will never go into a cave again and may have to take a flashlight into my closets.
I hate all of you.
You should all kill yourself for liking this movie.
*Walks up to each of you individually, his arms crossed and his head cocked to the side. He moves his head upright and shakes it slowly, his eyes following suit with a slow closing. 'Damn.' He then walks away.*
To the one who calls himself 'God', you are a dork. Go away.
This movie was great, but the writer/director didn't really seem to be any kind of decent human being with the way he ended it (the uncut ending). If you watch the behind the scenes features and the way he talks/interacts with the girls, it's obvious he doesn't respect females in general. (the vagina-shaped cave?) Something fishy about him.
What bothered me about the film is that these women were strong, determined, flawed, and in the end, received no justice. The writer/director seems a tad creepy to me. In the end, you're left with despair which I think was his intention. The overall credit goes solely to the 6 girls.
Lastly, the way 'Beth' was killed was a slap in the face to the audience. She was also my favorite character. Figures he chose her to be killed in such an unfair way.
I agree, it was pretty clear that Juno was having an affair with Sarah's husband. Some of the clues have already been mentioned. There were other clues too : That's why she left town so quickly after his death, and that's why she said to one of her friends: 'We all lost someone in that crash.'
I like a movie that is subtle, that doesn't feel the need to explain everything at the end. As to why Juno appears in Sarah's car at the end, that's left completely up to our interpretation and imagination, I think. And that's great!
One question: I'm curious about the arrows Juno followed in the cave. Do you think she put those there herself on an earlier visit?
You guys are all brain surgeons and rocket scientists. Not.
Of course the Asian looking piece had an affair with the whining blonde's husband. Seriously, did you need sub-titles to tell you that?
I'm the dumbest movie watcher in the world, but that was clear.
The biggest disappointment of the movie, which really did start well in terms of scenery and tension, was the sudden and unexplained appearance of a whole bunch of cast-offs from the Lord of the Rings movies. The Family Gollem sure did come out of nowhere. The thing that really bugged me about these creatures was that in one scene, a single Gollem would have incredible power and strength; in the next scene, six of them wouldn't be able to kill someone off. It was like the baddies were a poorly drawn after thought.
I just have two questions:
1) Someone wrote earlier that Juno's necklace showed that Juno had an affair with Sara's husband. How did the necklace show that>
2) I only saw the unrated DVD version- how did the movie theater version end?
Thanks for your help!
Intrigued; go watch the movie again, and listen this time & your questions will be answered. Sassy, you are right, Gollum lookalikes that could be invincible one moment, then useless in numbers against one woman didn't make sense. Juno was making out with Sarah's husband; Beth was starting to suspect; Juno was trying to right wrongs by the 'surprise' cave exploratory; Sarah did NOT make it out of the cave (think about it, you are over 2 miles deep into a cave, she fell after she wounds Juno-you really think she just 'walks away'???)God-you need to get a grip on reality, this is a movie (that you obviously have a problem with). I personally thought that this movie was great action, with women adventurers, for a change. I am not a feminist at all, but love adventure and the outdoors, so it was a great adventure and suspense/drama/horror movie that I really did enjoy. Remember, it is a movie, not real life :)
This is a great movie
claustrophobic, always can feel their downfall. the soundtrack of their drive to the caves on its own is enough to choke you up in fear. the whole time you are just waiting for the moment of their death, how it comes you dont know until the video camera shot of the 'thing' behind them. and the crazy thing is that neil marshall actually kept what the 'monster' would look like a secret so the fear is real.
I just saw the movie and as my partner is currently traveling I was all alone in the apartment. I do like scary movies and to be honest cant recall ever having been REALLY scarily upset by any movie since about the age of 12..
However, this movie just ended, around 02h30 AM and I just HAD to call a friend just to hear a friendly and familiar voice - in order to break this weird creepy atmosphere hanging around the place now!!! without that I would not have been able to get in bed!! I just felt totally upset and weird after the viewing! so what can I say, this MUST simply a memorable piece of work when it comes to scary movies ---
is the regular dvd or the unrated version better?
i saw the US ending version and it's VERY GOOD but a little to gory
for my taste but I don't want the NON-unrated version if it's
gonna suck.
