The Alchemist -

Based on "The Alchemist" by Paolo Coehlo. It's the story of a well educated man named Santiago whose desire to travel draws him away from plans to enter the priesthood. He ends up as a contended shepherd instead. But he dreams of buried treasure and, being a well educated man, he takes them as some sort of sign and follows their instructions. The dreams lead him to a seer who tells him to follow his visions to Egypt and the pyramids where he'll find riches.

Didn't really picture Lawrence Fishburn playing Santiago. I pictured someone a lot younger. Considering Santiago was also refered to as 'boy'. Maybe he could play the Alchemist? But not Santiago. I probably wouldn't see the movie then cause that would ruin the book for me.

i read on another website that laurence is going to play the alchemist. It doesn't look like anyone actually knows whats going on with this movie. I just pray this movie lives up to the standard of the book.. otherwise for such a brilliant man like paulo, he did a real silly thing selling the rights.. but lets be optimistic and pray for the best. Who knows? Maybe this movie will inspire alot of people..

I sincerely hope LF has the good sense to play the Alchemist and not Santiago. I could totally see him as the Alchemist, but no way in hell could he pull off the character of Santiago and stay true to the book. He's a smart and talented man, let's hope he doesn't screw this one up.

Agree! Agree! Agree! LF as Santiago will not work. Definitely goes against portrayal in the book. How about Orlando Bloom?

the alcemist is one of the most loved stories of our time . It is I believe what Paulo did with his sword. Mr. Fishburne's greatest challenge will be to stay as true to that story . I do hope it isn't simply a matter of Lawrence wanting to be Neno this time .

Hopes are high. Paulo should be in an advisory role so as not to compromise the integrity of the book. I can't wait, I think Lawrence has sense enough not to cast himself as the boy , Orlando would be a good choice. I can also see Johnny Depp as the Alchemist, that would rock! This book was great reminded me of Celistine Prophecy. It's like a reminder to my soul that I just need to listen.

It seems that there should be Arab actors playing the roles of the major characters in the book. I love LF like everyone, but does it makes sense? I'm not sure that it does. I just hope the movie comes out soon! Of course it probably won't be as good as the book, but I've never seen a movie that was. Staying with the theme and conveying the spiritual significance of the piece is the real trick that will make or break the movie for me.

I think that LF would make a perfect Alchemist. Besides, both Morpheus and the Alchemist are essentially the 'Hermes Trismegistus' character in their respective tales, and I think he nailed that role. There is no reason historically or anthropologically that the Alchemist couldn't be a black African as opposed to an Arab in that northern Africa has always been a crossroads of the cultures. I have been wanting this book to be made into a movie ever since I first read it some fifteen years ago, and now that I have discovered that LF is in fact going to play the Alchemist and not Santiago I have faith in the fact that it will be wonderful.

i think orlando bloom was far too old to play santiago.. maybe someone in his early 20s, hmmm, can't think of someone so brilliant at that age right now though

I cant wait to see the movie.... I think people cannot compare a novel to the movie that it is based on because lets not forget that they are both two different mediums that need to be judged on there on merits. The book was amazing and if the movie can inspire people whom had not read the novel in the same way... then i personally believe it has done well. Little trivia my name in the Persian language (and as i have found out in some other Middle Eastern countries) means alchemy :)

I think LF should portray the Alchemist.. Anthropologically speaking, Mr. LF is perfect...

Santiago shall be young.. Early to mid 20's.. And Not Orlando or Depp... Someone new..

Many aspiring actors in the UK and USA that are of Spanish and/or Middle Eastern decent..

I saw one the other day called 'Mo Nassah' on you tube.. His IMDB credits are impressive also.. Mo Nassah for the role of Santiago would be perfect also..

In regards to Fatima -- I would say '??' also many new comers, yet a C+ celeb would be best... Many of those too in the USA and UK with the specific regions looks..

Hope it's a great one and done to the best and most authentic manner.

Thanks for reading.

This book is pure, and LF has held to his own maxim before and I doubt he'll let us down. Paulo is working very closely with LF and GL and from what I've read from him in regards to this film, I weightily doubt that he'll allow it to alter from the book, except where necesary.

well I sure do hope the movie is as fantastic as the book. But Paulo C did say he was not going to sell the rights to any of his other books simply because reading is incomparable to watching (any of his books).

I have read this book twice and I just don't think that LF should play Santiago. He should play the Alchemist. As you read the book you picture Santiago as a young boy, not an older man. Mr. F is a talented actor but I just cannot picture him as Santiago.

I feel the same way. Santiago is a boy, Fishburne is too old to play a character refered to as a 'boy'.

And I doubt the movie will be any good. A book as good as this one has to be hard to bring it to screen without failure.

I really hope that Lawrence Fishburne rethinks playing Santiago. He is definitely to old to play the part. It is a part for a young boy late teens or early twenties. It would really ruin the film for me and others. This is such an important book and it really needs to be done right. I really think this book done into a film could really change people's lives. So, Mr. Fishbure, if you read this, please consider what this book could do for people and please cast it correctly if you want to make the biggest impact.

This can't be true. It's the story of a YOUNG man searching for his personal legend. He could be so completely miscast that there must be a mistake, don't you think?

my opinionSep 28th, 2008 - 23:30:46

We need a fresh face to play the part of Santiago, as Mel Gibson had for Apocalypto's main actors. With Fishburn a known actor, however, I believe Santiago may be a well-known actor too. I hope that's not the case because nobody worthy of playing Santiago comes to mind.

'Morpheus' should definitely be The Alchemist. Seems a little risky to play the role of the boy instead. Regardless, the movie should be great publicity for the book, which I hope poeple are ultimately drawn to. Well done to Laurence Fishburne for giving it a shot.

I heard that Mr. Fishburen, who by the way is one of my favorite actors, will play the Alchemist. I agree with some other comments, the role of Santiago should be a younger man. I'm sure Mr. Fishburne will play the Alchemist. I am anxiously awaiting this movie. I read the book in 4 hours, one rainy morning. Loved it and purchased it for my students. They too are waiting for the movie to be released. I'm sure it will be well represented!

santiago is a naive, innocent 'boy' LF is miles away from that. And LF could simply choke the port thief to death! another good santiago would be spiderman's toby maguire, and the merchant's daughter could be rachel leigh cook.
