Based on the bestselling novel by Patrick Süskind, “Perfume” is a terrifying story of murder and obsession set in 18th-century France.

Jean-Baptiste Grenouille has a unique talent for discerning the scents and smells that swirl around him, which he uses to create the world’s finest perfumes. Strangely lacking any scent of his own, he becomes obsessed with capturing the irresistible but elusive aroma of young womanhood. As Grenouille’s obsession turns deadly, twelve young girls are found murdered. Panic breaks out as people rush to protect their daughters, while an unrepentant and unrelenting Grenouille still lacks the final ingredient to complete his quest.

Ben Whishaw, the acclaimed young British actor who won several awards for his performance in the independent film “My Brother Tom,” stars in the central role of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, the killer on the hunt for the perfect scent. The film also stars Emmy and Golden Globe winner Alan Rickman (“Rasputin,” the “Harry Potter” franchise), Rachel Hurd-Wood (2003’s “Peter Pan”) and two-time Academy Award® winner Dustin Hoffman (“Rain Man,” “Kramer vs. Kramer”).

“Perfume” was directed by Tom Tykwer, the award-winning director of “Heaven” and the German film “Run Lola Run.” Bernd Eichinger (“Downfall,” “The Neverending Story,” “The Name of the Rose”) produced the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Andrew Birkin (“The Name of the Rose”) and Tykwer, based on Patrick Süskind’s novel of the same name.

“Perfume – The Story of a Murderer” will be distributed domestically by DreamWorks.

So glad I had read the book as I am sure it made the film nore 'digestable'. It was a huge experience. Fantasy, fear, horror. Marvellous music sound track about which I am going to explore. The execution scene was absolutely fantastic. Wonderful little snips of humour. What a masterpiee of film making. To my taste it made the boring'Babel' contrived and banal. Congratulations to all concerned.

I rented this movie from blockbuster the other day, it was a new release, and it looked interesting, and i love a good murder movie that makes you think. I had never heard of it.
The movie though, was extraordinary, and strangely...its beeing getting bad reviews. But, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
People say that making a movie out of a book ruins its art, movies are art too. No one forces you to watch them. When you read a book you create the pictures in your head and you let your imagination flow. That is a beautiful thing. When someone makes a movie about a book, they want to show you how someone ELSE saw it. I think thats wonderful. Seeing a book from another persons view is like being in their mind, its a new experience. You love to show the world whats going on in your head, its like when an artist has a image in their head that is so wonderful, it would be greedy to keep it to your self. What do they do? They paint the image in their head, to share it. No one drags you by the hair to see a painting. You see it because its a form of art, and it makes you think.
I just watched the movie, and right when it ended, i jumped off of my bed and went straight to google to find somewhere id like to comment on the movie.
It was WONDERFUL! The story is incredible, I just wanted to find Suskind and tell him what i thought of his mind. Im very jealous. Not only was the story amazing, but the quality of the movie was good as well. Thats hard to find.
The story, its incredible. Im young, very young...but i have a very good insight on things. Now i want to run out and buy the book! Tomorrow...i am going to tell everyone i know to watch the movie or read the book...or, both. I love all forms of art, so many people judge movies on flaws, but if you spend your time pointing out the flaws...wont you miss the beauty?
The movie had everything horror, hate, love, trust, murder, life, fantasy, curiosity...i could go on forever!
You do have to be open minded to truly enjoy every minute of it.
