I loved Paradise Lost. The language, the plot, everything was fantastic. And I'm not a huge poetry or middle English fan, so that's saying something. I can't wait for this movie to come out!!
But I hope they put some thought into this, Milton's work was always in between justifying the devil vs. promoting god (it was controversial in its day), this isn't the next Passion of the Christ: Milton's Jesus is shows as a bully and 'the son who inherits by right of birth', which Satan objects to. The story's also told from the point of view of Satan. It's a story that gives both sides of the argument, more or less.
I just hope people don't get ultra religious and write in themes Milton's work didn't contain.
But MAN! I want crazy CGI and epic battles and subtle themes here!
what is the song from the film that they all dance to in the bar.
and pru says that they're singing about somthing in the back of the car
I don't quite know what to think about this film idea. I am a conservative christian who believes in the bible, but obviously Milton never intended to add to the bible or even make his story compliment the bible, so I don't think I (or any other knowledgeable religious person, I think) will be offended by this film (if it is made).
What i think everyone needs to realize about this film is that the makers cannot please everyone that will see this movie. The Milton experts will probably dislike at least parts of it because 1. how do you visually show a character like Satan, who is seen in the story in so many forms (the beautiful angel, the beast, the serpent) 2. how do you create the settings? (like eden, heaven, or hell)
Remember: what is Hollywood's goal? Why would they make this movie? To be commercial, aka to make money, not necessarily to be absolutely true to Milton.
I think this could be a very good movie. With good CGI, good acting, good writing, and a clever way to show nudity without really showing nudity, it could make for a fine Best Picture Award winner.
I read the book several times. I had to. There were several parts that needed to be surgicaly analyzed. The invocation of light and so forth. A beautiful work of art painted with words. I feel like this movie will not do the book justice. I feel like it would have been better done in animation. Oh well.
I'm currently reading the book, and just found out that there was going to be a movie. The writers and directors claim to be christian, and one of them said he was studying theology books just to get everything right.
I don't go to see many movies, but this is one where you can count me in.
What the hell?
have we forgotten the essential beauty in ambiguous delivery of paradise lost.
The miltonic simile is all about ambiguity
'His Spear, to equal which the tallest Pine
Hewn on Norwegian hills, to be the Mast
Of some great Ammiral, were but a wand,'
(book I)
Milton provides you a massive image of satan without ever actually describing his size, ('but a wand' in relationship to what? the original description of the spear? the pines? the mast? hence... ambiguity) because he considered it sacrilegious to even consider the actual size of any God. to apply any visual standard to this book would be RAPING Milton's text and purpose, not to mention handing it over to the hack who brought us timeless gems such as Emily Rose.
Don't be a pussy, boycott this film, read the fucking book.

Ever since I first read Paradise Lost I envisioned a movie to hit the screens. It is a chance to see Christ not as a helpless babe or a dead guy on a cross, but as the powerful Pre-incarnate Word of God. Throw in some Lord of the Rings CGI and you have an award winner. PLEASE DON'T LET THIS MOVIE BE CHEESY!! Do it right! Spend the cash.
