Four people in a coffee shop chat about difference between comedy and tragedy. A woman in the group relates the story of a woman who turns up unannounced to a dinner party. Two of playwrights present then give their versions of what happens next, one comedic and the other tragic.
The film then follows the two alternative outcomes, thus the Melinda and Melinda title.
