I agree, Christopher Paloni stole alot of his ideas from Tolkien
Don't make me laugh.
Fantastic book fantastic movie.
Name me one Fantasy/sci-fi book that hasn't stolen ideas off others.
Regards
To say that Eragon is based on Tolkien is actually a great compliment because Tolkien is fantastic -- and regardless of what parallel one might draw between the two, Eragon is definitely its own unique story and I for one can't wait to see it on the big screen! - Tsunami47
I agree w/ tsunami. It was a great way to put it. And besides, if some one were to write any great adventure story, it would be compared to Tolkien. I think this book would have been the same w/out Tolkien's writing. -Ayra
Of course he copied off of Tolkien. Tolkien has so much to it that to not copy any ideas from him would get you like a 50 page book. Plus the kid was 15 when he wrote Eragon.
Eragon is a great novel.
But the movie is a disgrace.
The storyline is greatly reduced to less than 30% of the actual content, the actual meaning that makes Eragon Eragon is taken away and whats left is just what others see as a rip off of Lord of the Rings.
Why..
-Many people loved to listen to Brom's stories and would gather around him to hear them, unlike in the movie where others critisized him.
-In the early part of the story, Brom was the one who told Eragon about dragons, after Eragon asked about them. He even got the name Saphira from Brom, unlike the movie where Eragon introduces his dragon's name to Brom.
-Eragon didn't know Saphira was a female until Saphira rejected the male names that Eragon tried to give her. In the movie, the name Saphira was assumed, and so was her gender: Saphira learns to fly and flies far away.. Eragon: 'She's gone.'
-The connection between Eragon and Saphira was not very well established in the movie.
-The growing of Saphira was gradual, not like the instaneous one in the movie, and Saphira was a little too big for a young dragon.
-Arya was a very strong characther, more like an instructor to Eragon, unlike in the movie, which gives the impression that Eragon and Arya are a 'match'..
-Arya was unconsious ever since the poison from Durza was inserted, and the poison was put in her food to limit her magical capabilities.
-Eragon met the fortune teller in a city, not a village.
-The scar should be on Eragon's left hand, not the right, if I'm not mistaken.
-There were supposed to be 2 whole chunks of stroyline before and after Eragon's saving of Arya that was taken away COMPLETELY.
-Eragon takes a long time to learn his magical abilities. In the book, Brom was the one who taught him, firstly by moving a piece of stone to hover up and down, while in the movie, Eragon catches it almost instantly and the immediately able to use a vine to grab away one entire Urgal as his 2nd spell following the Fire Arrow.
-Eragon only realised Brom was a rider much later on.
-There was a name for the scar, and the movie didn't cover that.
-The path Eragon took towards the mountains was supposed to be throught a dry desert, where he needed to use him magic abilities to retain water as he digged down to drink it, while in the movie, they just rode on and on... through Green Lush vegetation...
-One of the most important spells in the novel was Scrying. Not even once was it shown in the movie.
-The Ancient Language was not used at all except for casting spells.
-The Vardens had 2 priests that were used to search Eragon's mind to find out if he was telling the truth. In fact, Eragon needed Saphira's help to block away certain memories that he didn't want the priests to know.
-The battle at the end of the movie was badly done, mainly just Saphira flying around breathing fire.
-The novel ends with Eragon making his way to the seek the Elves, unlike the movie which Arya says:'You need to stay to Prepare the Vardens', which is totally off.
-The movie focusses too much on the Physical Aspect of Eragon and Saphira, instead of what makes Eragon different from other movies like LotR. Eragon and Saphira's minds were linked closely together and the only evidence of this in the movie was the telepathy and Eragon seeing as Saphira's viewpoint during flying.
I am a great fan of the Eragon novel. I loved it.. As soon as i heard there was a Eragon movie, I was SO excited. Today I watched it and came back dissapointed. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but in my opinion, the movie greatly degrades the story of Eragon.
Warning: a bit of the movie is revealed here...
I saw Eragon tonight and I have only read the very beginning of the book. A librarian whom I work with says: a book is a book and a movie is a movie. You can't compare the two. Movies are a different medium and express things in completely different ways than books. Even though she says this I still get mad when plots are butchered, so I am glad that I don't know how much this one was.
I thought the story was a bit rushed (which is wierd since the book is apparently so good.) and sometimes cheesy, but all in all it was far better than I thought it would be and I was richly entertained. I loved the depth of character represented in the dragon and that it was a female. Of course that is coming from a female fantasy fan, so I am biased. I am also a computer animator and I thought the dragon's movements and textures were absolutely amazing. The baby dragon was so so so so so cutesy wootsiely adorable! Men were probably a bit bored until it grew up. Although secretly I think they thought it was sooo cute. :-)
Due to the rushed state of the story, there wasn't much time for character development, but they were okay. I was starting to get annoyed with hearing the 'You be careful.' 'No, you be careful' 'No, YOU be careful.' exchange between the dragon and the Eragon. Some moments that could have been used for character development were a bit slow and filled with not much of anything. It was also just a bit too bizarre/unbelievable that Eragon walked EASILY into the home of the shade and saved the red headed chick who looks a bit too old for him, but that's ok, because I am a red head and we tend to need younger men to keep up with our energy! LOL!
It certainly wasn't perfect (no movie is), but I really liked it and will probably see it again. I would love to see more creatures in the next one, but I figured they spent most of their FX budget on the dragon which was definitely lovely to look at. If you like dragons at all, I highly advise seeing this movie. I hope you enjoy it too.
The book was so bad that I'm not even going to bother seeing this film. The PROFESSIONAL reviews I've read say it all. All of you who think this film and book are the greatest things since the Lord of the Rings should go back to reading Harry Potter and Trudi Canavan's awful 'Magician' trilogy.
Maybe you could try being a little more open-minded? Professional reviews don't always mean the movie or book will be bad for you personally. All people have different likes and dislikes. And if you're so concerned with professional views maybe you shouldn't be reading our OH SO average UNPROFESSIONAL comments? And Eragon is a spectacular book which you don't have the broadness of mind to accept.
I think everyone is missing the real story that's getting ripped off: Star Wars.
Lets take look, shall we?
Farmboy? Check.
Mysterious old codger that is secretly the last of his order and takes the farmboy underhis wing to teach him the secrets of the For-I mean, dragons? Check.
Mysterious old codger dies valiantly in the first movi- I mean, book? Check.
A good, old fashioned Evil Empire? Check.
Evil right hand man that is also a former member of that very same order? check.
Seriously, there is NOTHING original in this story. You look hard enough, and you'll see that there is a lot of Lucas and Tolkien in the story, to the point where its almost pathetic. I'm not blaming the guy for being unoriginal. Every plot conceivable has been milked to its fullest extent. I'm just fed up with people who think this story is God's gift to literature.
It isn't.
the hell it is
Terrible book to movie, and terrible movie period. Good book though.
Im going to see the movie in like an hour, and after reading these comments, im a little disheartened. Eragon is my alltime favorite BOOK, but the movie sounds like it didnt do the book justice. i just hope that the director didnt just try to make the movie a technological marvel, whil skipping on all the important stuff.
TTYL,
TJ
The movie was flat out HORRIBLE, atleast if you read the book. i went with my cousin who never read the book and he loved it, but if youve read the book youd know that atleast 3 characters were completely left out of the movie, and half the story line. In all honesty i dont buy the excuse that the author had nothing to do with the movie, he didnt have to, if the producer actually read the book he could have dont an awesome job with this movie. Really the only similarity between the book and the movie was peoples names.
alqx was mistaken in a few sectuions. The scar SHOULD be on eragon's right hand which the movie did correctly. The ancient language IS used for speaking AS WELL AS spells. It is the language the elves use and eragon sometimes speaks to Arya using it. The Varden did not have two priests searching eragon's mind, they had the twins who were MAGICIANS. I have not yet seen the movie so I cannot give my opinion of it. I did however notice that there were quite a few comments saying how alike eragon is to stories like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Harry Potter. I agree, but not completely. The story is original with aspects that if I were Christopher Paolini, I would not use. LOTR, HP and SW do not have a story focusing on dragons as eragon does. The Hobbit has a dragon in it but it is the same as all other dragons in fantasy novels. HP has dragons in the fourth book for the 1st task of the Triwizard Tournament and Harry fights one. Star Wars does not ahve dragons in it as far as I know. Neither J.K Rowling nor J.R.R Tolkien thought up the creature so Christopher Paolini is not copying from them in that aspect. I think that there are names that are too close however and as I said above, if I were CP then I would have not made them sound as much the the same whether they were intentionally copied or not. Here are some examples[(c)means charcter]:
LOTR Eragon/Eldest HP
Aragorn(c) Eragon(c) Aragog(c)
Arwen(c) Ardwen(lake)
Harad(a desert country) Hadarac Desert
Isengard(city) Isenstar(lake)
Beorn(bearlike c) Beorn (elvish name for
dwarven cave)and also
Beor(mountains)
Wormtongue(traitorous c) Wormtail(traitorous c)
Osgiliath(place) Osilon(place)
elves, dwarves, men elves, dwarves, men
Orcs Urgals(slightly similar to Orcs)
Black Riders/Nazgul Ra'zac Dementors
{Nazgul, Ra'zac and Dementors all wear black cloaks, smell like rotting corpses and make whoever goes near them weak, hopeless and scared. Nazgul and Ra'zac ride on flying steeds and have a piercing scream. All are also afraid of or weak in sunlight.)
I also think J.K Rowling copied the horcrux lake with the little boat in it and the rock in the middle from the lake that gollum lives in(did I mention there is also a boat that gollum rows around in and a rock in the middle). These are both similar in description. There are other things of course that they have all copied off each other though a couple may have been by chance. For instance, I thought that the name 'Eragon' was a copy of 'Aragorn' but the other day I read that someone thought he got the name by taking the 'D' off 'Dragon' and replacing it with an 'E', making 'Eragon'. I think that is waht he did. Even after showing many similarities I think those books are origial with things in common. For example, a hobbit must destroy a ring to kill the evil guy. A boy wizard must destroy all the horcruxes to kill the evil guy. A boy drgaonrider must kill the evil dragonriders to let good prevail and get the last dargon egg to save the race of dragons. these books are different yet similar. They have their innocent unsuspecting heroes (Frodo, Harry and Eragon) swept into a dangerous world of magic and good versus evil. They have their companions (Ron and Hermione; Sam and the Fellowship; Saphira, Orik and Arya) who help them along the way. An old mentor who dies and may or may not come back to life(Gandalf, Dumbledore and Brom) and who dyed saved or trying to protect the heroe. They must ultimately defeat the bad guy (Sauron, Voldemort and Galbatorix) to save the world. There is a traitor (Saruman and wormtongue; wormtail, snape and Draco; Forsworn, Murtagh
and the twins) who have joined the evil guy. Even though they are similar, they have their diferences. Harry Potter is modern day and primarily about teenagers and magic. LOTRs is set in another time and about a hobbit with no amazing power or physical strength. It is one long journey with a known destination. Eragon/Eldest is about a boy dragonrider who sets out looking for revenge but ends up in a war. They all have battles, wars and weapons, whether they be fighting with wands, swords or dragons. So after that long comment I have to say all are really, really, really, interesting, exciting and well written books. I must also thank you if you have even bothered to read this comment.
Read the Eragon and loved it...listened to the audio book and loved it...saw the movie...well Saphira was good err...except her voice. That's about all I can say that is good about the movie. Zarock was not even correct. The sword was red, but the crystal in the hilt was support to be a ruby. Aren't rubies red? I wondered if the writers even read Christopher's books. If they could make Saphira, why didn't the Ergals look like Ergals? I would be suprised if the second book will ever make it to the movie screen.
I highly reccomend both the Eragon and Eldest books... if you like fantasy.
A failure of a movie.
Christopher Poalini has written one of the best books that I have ever read, and before going to the movies i was totally excited. Of course within 2 minutes of the movie starting (no exageration) I was dissapointed. Usually when I'm at the theater I dont want a movie to end. Instead, I was counting the moments untill it would. I guess, if i had not read the book the movie would not have been overly bad, but I have, and the movie didnt live up to my excpectations. I was really dissapotinted in the fact that they left so much out. I know all movies based off books have to do this, but do they have to leave out some major details? Some of the charactars i was extremely surprised by. Like Angela, the fortune teller. In the book she seemed like a relatively nice old lasy or something. In the movie she looks like a young woman thats possesed by a demon. Galbatorix was not captured in the least. I dont know about you, but I feel like he should have been concealed until the third movie, at least his face. And Eragon wasn't a good actor if you ask me. His faces were pretty funny because they were so stupid.
I don't know, but the way they switched some things around got me pretty upset and all I could do was stare at my friend and laugh at how stupid the movie was turning out. In my opinion they should have taken much more time on this movie. But hey, I'm excited for the third book, can't wait really, and I'd rather read that then see the movie anyways. So christopher, keep the book, drop the director.

How can a book that is so rich and thoughtful become a uterly horrible film devoid of anything Paolini wrote. The movie wouldn't have been good if I never read the book. It is such a shame that the screenwriters took it upon themselves to rewrite a drab plottless story. Yes, this trilogy has some Lord of the Rings characteristics, but what fantasy series doesn't. At least fans of Tolkien did the movies. I wish Eragon fans would have done this movie. I feel FOX was not prepared to spend the $$$ to do this book justice. Every aspect was done wrong, screenplay, casting, direction, all of it!! The CG was good, but a 4 minute battle scene that wasn't at all like the book, get real.
What's with the VARDEN being Arabs!!! Go figure
Sorry for not adding this earlier but I just thought of another thing about the movie that wasn't very neccesary to take out.
To me, the Urgals in the movie just looke dliek a bunch of big guys with face paint and piercings. Not at all what i pictured. In the book I clearly remember that Urgals had large twisted horns, and even a member of Carvahall had a pair mounted on his wall/his door post. Why cut this out? Budget cuts? Heh, I doubt it but i'd have to agree with some comments I heard earlier: did the directors even read this book? And if they did, they couldn't have read Eldest because they cut out important things that are essential to the second movie. Unless something is improved, I won't be making a mad dash to the movie theaters once Eldest comes out. I'd liek to say once again though, that if you saw the movie but haven't read the books, give them a chance. They're really great, some of my favorite books in fact.
Thanks

Haha bluerah_cats, thats funny. The first thing I did after seeing the Varden during the movie was lean over to my friends and whispered, 'There Arabian!' Heh, that kinda caught me off guard too. DOesn't it make you mad also, that the main objective in the begginign of the book Eragon was to hunt down and kill the razzac ( cloaked figures ). Yet, somehow, the objective in the movie was turned into reachign the varden, and Eragon was being hunted ( by things that had maggots runnign through their face ). Brom was given enough credit. Brom the story teller was respectable in the book, In the movie, Eragon pretty much disobeys him, pushes him aside, then Brom saves him from Durza (which isn't even how Brom dies int he book ). Bad story line? I'd say so.

Quote: 'Eragon is a great novel.
But the movie is a disgrace.'
Agreed
The book was amazing but they buchered the movie.
'I'm the rider and I say go!' Come on!!!!! Also the costumes were dreadful!!!
Slams,
You are right!!!!
If anyone wants a good read, try the Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud.
As soon as i saw the first scene i wanted to scream. I really hated it. And if it wasn't just the fact that everything was wrong. Also they left out HUGE parts. Like the blessing/curse thing was left out. The drawfs and politcal areas of the story were gone. The leader wasn't killed in the battle. The cat like thing was gone completely. And they didn't even mention Ari being elf and skipped the whole getting to know his brother/friend was gone.ect. They don't even have the basic steps to Eldest. It was just horrable all over.
I agree with what 'alqx' wrote.
I feel the movie is an insult to the book. I thoroughly enjoyed the books Eragon & Eldest and am looking forward to the third book but I will not bother to go and see Eldest as a movie after seeing Eragon. It was more like a book review - it only skimmed the surface and also a lot was changed. I have seen better movies based on books than this - we needed Peter Jackson in charge of this movie - he would've done a great job!
I also say well done Christopher Paolini for writing these exciting books and I hope that their credability doesn't get damaged too much by the movies.
Ok...the first thing that I do when I walk into a movie theater that is showing a movie 'based' off of a book is painfully remove the book and everything about it from my mind. Then I can most likely enjoy the movie that is being played. I used this method with all the Harry Potter movies and Lord of Rings. I think that all you critics are being a little too harsh. Just because the movie isn't the way you wanted it to be doesn't me that are given permission to rip it to shreds and complain about how different from the book it was. Everyone knew that it wouldn't be exactly like the book! Don't judge a movie by its book! I loved the novel and liked the movie almost as much. Maybe everyone should attempt my method and go see the movie again...just a friendly suggestion.
Wow. I've never seen a movie this bad. Since when can durza summon a dragon of smoke... I guess no more hadarac desert. Saphira transforms in the clouds :S. There was like 3 dwarves in the movie. They didn't even put Orik in it. Hrothgar just stood with his big staff and didn't really do anything. Bad dialogue. So ya didn't really wanna relate to the book that much. Both books were excellent though.
I thought that the movie was pretty good. I would have really liked it if I hadn't read the book, which I LOVED.Throughout the the movie, which I went to see with my friends who haven't read the book, they kept asking me what was going to happen next and I couldn't answer because nothing was the same from the book. I loved the way Saphira looked and the actors were close but not quite what I invisiened, but they never are. I wish it could have been more like the book. That would have made it better. I was a little disappointed, but liked it anyway. Moveies and books are totally different things and often tell different stories. If you haven't read the book, you'll like it more, even though it seemed very rushed to me. How they're going to pull off 'Eldest' I don't know because they left so much out, but we shall see.
If u think that reading these comments will influence u while seeing the movie...dont cauze u really dont need any help to hate the movie all i gotta ask is why the hell dident Paolini try to fix things after he read the script ??? and the conclusion i come to is that they paid him enough to shut him up and act like he likes the movie...the books were awesome and for all those who havnt read the books yet..dont let the movie stop u from reading the books
It was torture. Nothing less than torture. I knew it was bad was going to be a loooong bad movie when I saw the first scene. Those who have read the books don't need to hear why, they already know. I'm here to talk about costume and set design. I was appalled when I saw the horror of the ra'zac. What were they? Zombie's? I thought they were supposed to be cloaked! They were cloathed and they don't like the sun! How was that one 'ra'zac' standing there in braod day light? And since when did they come from the ground????? Even though we learn it in the second book, aren't their parent's bird like things? They don't come from the ground. I was highly upset because I had pictured the towns a little more developed, especially Jeods, but then again he wasn't there was he? Eragon at least had his own room in an actual house didn't he?. The invisiblity design of Solembum upset me greatly. I was really excited to see how they would design the character,I wondered if their ideas matched with my own but whoops! No Solembum. I think the one thing that upset me most of all, was the fact that Saphira blew fire. She's not supposed to, she's not old enough. THe scripting was cheesy and the elf didn't have elf ears. She's nothing but a human who calls herself an elf if you ask me. Her armour wasn't armour but a very pretty Asain style dress. I agree with some commenters that some of the scenes were very much like LoTR. Especially, the wepon preparation. Which if your going to mimic, at least be precise. Don't just film it in a room filled with smoke. My blood boiled when I saw the belly dancing outfit she had on, and she doesn't refer to herself in the third person. From the book she doesn't even appear to be a flashy person! There are to many mistakes to list in one sitting so I shall stop. I end by saying please save your friends and family from this movie.
I forgot to say that I was talking about Angela's costume in that last little bit.
well... i was a big fan of the first book but this moveie was just pathetic. For me and my friends, it was probably the best commedy we've seen this year. From the begining i could tell it would be terrible. It was like the commentator person that made the begining seem cheesy. Also what the heck was up with the dragon like getting struck by lightning to get older??? that was just stupid. Also the Vardens golden costumes looked sad and fake. Big Dissapointment
The book was amazing. But the movie is totally horrible compared to the book, and degrades the book greatly. There was WAY too much scenes of travelling in the movie, and there wasn't enough time to show the bonding between Saphira/Eragon, Brom/Eragon, and Murtagh/Eragon.
the book was awesome the movie was disgraceful and should be remade and fox should stop making movies after seeing that crap it almost made me cry on how much was changed, left out, and just never happened what they did was 500 page book to a 50 page short story
Well, that movie sucked.
Even without reading the books it would have sucked.
The books surely aren't the most enticing or original fantasy books ever, but I still enjoyed them, and am looking forward to the third one. That movie however... uhg.
What happaned to...
Urgal horns, Orik, Solembum, the Hadaraac Desert, Teirm and Jeod, the whole thing with Roran and Katrina, which is crucial to the second book, the Twins, which are also important to the second book, Zaroc having a ruby pommel, Arya having black hair and pointy ears, the battle of Farthen Dur, which was like four minuted of blury clanging metal and then a battle between Eragon and Durza with some... smokey bat thing that wasn't in the book?
What happened to the Razaac being bird-like? What happened to the action in general? It was all close-up and blury. What happened to Eragon trying to decide to name his dragon and then naming her Saphira after what he later learns was the name of Brom's dragon? What happened to the whole thing with the varden's spell casters? Why did Nasuada, Ajihad and Hrothgar only have like three lines apiece? Why was Arya all touchy-feely with Eragon? What's the deal with Saphira growing up in a split second and then flying back down to introduce her name to Eragon? What ever happened to some sort of musical score? All I heard were faint, vague, bland chords in the background every now and then that depicted only the barest emotions of 'exciting' or 'emotional'?
Why is the manner with which he meets Murtagh switched around with other plot events?
And Arya should not be anywhere but dead asleep on Saphira's back from the time she's rescued to the time they reach the Varden. Why was Brom's death all messed up and changed from the book? Why do we see Galbatorix at all? Why did Angela have a one and a half minute cameo, and why didn't she show up at Farthen Dur? Why the heck did they take out Eragon's getting the scar on his back- which is also crucial to the second book? What about Isidar Mirthrim? Where'd that go? How about his blessing of the child, and being given the name Argetlam? That's also important for the second one. Why were a thousand characters, plot events, and details about them ommited, twisted or rearranged?
The books were just fine, though unoriginal. You can argue that no fantasy books are entirely original, but some are more so than others. What's interesting to read is the different combinations he stolen. It's like reading LOTR, HP and SW all at once.
But despite their lack of originality, they were fun to read, and I enjoy them. The movie did no justice to it, or cinema in general whatsoever. There is no excuse for a five hundred page book to be reduced to a ninety minute piece of junk. They could have easily done a good job with this. It's not like it's particularly complicated... I mean, for crying out loud! This movie was shorter than the spongebob movie by a whole quarter of an hour!
I don't expect to see the sequel hit the big screen, and if it does, I'm not going to see it.
I'm going to read the third book though.
Let me start off.
The book is spectacular and descriptive.
The movie is the worst novel to movie adaption I have ever seen.
When I heard about it iot was obvious a lot was going to be taken out of the story fro the film, as is always - but I did not expect SO MUCH of the storyline to be taken out of it - and all of the important parts! And the change so much! for example; After they leave Carvahall they go to all sorts of places (including important parts) which are not in the film, because their original motive for leaving is to kill the Raz'zac for revenge, not to find the Varden - they go to the Varden after they rescue Arya - but even then - she is supposed to be unconcious and to get to the moutains they cross a desert - not hills and valleys and all that trash tey feed us.
I was also really disappointed with the length of the film. Its just not long enough to develop all of the character relationships - you don't really understand Brom and Eragon's relationship at all, they don't even develop Murtagh! There is so much more I can say but alas I cannot be bothered to type anymore.
Ovrall my final verdict :
1) Film too short
3) Doesn't develop relationships and storyline enough
3) Misses a lot of important thigns and also changes important thigns too.
4) Its mostly glitz and glamour and all luxurious 3D computer animations which cover for the really bad voel-movie adaption.
5) I am not brining down the book. The book is amazing as well as its sequel.
6) Read the book, just don't watch the movie - you'll be utterly dissappointed.
Belzer, out!
May I also add that I think that this movie is obviously just to make money; because nearly everyone who reads the book is going to love it - and so its already garunteed that they're goign to watch the movie - isn't it? And also the game...pathetic, they don't care about us fans of the book - they just make a crappy film which everyone thinks will be good because the book was amazing. The film was also extremely cheesey - I can't stand cheesey films they just suck all the originality and just everything good about movie into a dark black hole to be squashed into oblivion. The world is corrupt.
Also I apologise for any spelling errors I make in this review or the last one.
I type fast.
Book GREAT! But then the movie had to come along. When I first heard about the movie I was so ready to see how the directors were going to show the film, but in the first few minutes of the film, I was already becoming dissapointed. I'm going to be surprised if they even figure out how to make the Roran - Katrina relationship, considering they didn't even metion her name. There wasn't ANY backround on the spine except when Sloan wouldn't except his egg. There was no Palancar Valley or Carvahall. Roran pretty much dissapears after saying goodybye. There wasn't much background on the Ancient Language, and the dwarves don't have their own language. Hrothgar's name isn't mentioned once wh becomes more important later on. Nasuada probably had < 1 minute of showtime and she becomes important in the next book. No Orik or Bald Twins! No Forsorwn 13 and little information on the Varden. Angela is just some weird girl with weird clothing. And no Solembum who was a good part of the book. The Hadaraac desert became green fields with no Snowfire running through them. Eragon doesn't become bloody after riding Saphira who grew up so fast (literally). No mentioning the gedway ignesia. No Isidar Mithrim which is a part of the next book. No scrying which was one of my favorite spells in the book. Arya is awake the whole movie and is as normal as any other human in Carvahall. Urgals don't look anything how I expected them. I really like how they made Saphira look, but so many things were left out........
grate book horible move. fox dident put eney efort into making this move the author should be very affended by the buchering of his book cus thats exactly what happend they bucherd the book!
during the whole movie my friend and i kept looking at each other and saying 'this is soooo screwed up'
i mean what the heck was up with...everything?!?!
gosh, before i saw it i was pissed that eragon was blonde THEN when i saw how much they had changed around, removed, and just generally stuffed up i seriously felt like punching the writers, director, costume designers, practically EVERYONE who is to blame for such a horrible movie!
sure the special effects were good but like i'd rather hav eragon riding a spray painted horse with plastic wings if it meant the rest of the movie actually stuck to the plot!
They screwed up the chances of doing eldest as well, i mean they killed one of the ra'zac, didnt really develope murtagh and eragons friendship, havent introduced orik or solembum (so no were-cats), havnt mentioned eragons mothers name AND im not even sure eragon got his back cut (oh and wtf was up with murtaghs scar???)
And all that 'i hope tomorrow will come soon' at the end...what happened to arya being all serious and dark?
gawd i thought i'd make a short post agreeing with everyone whose said the movie sucked but i spose my anger got the best of me.
Overall i am extremely disappointed with the result, i mean we eragon had to wait all year for this! they turned an awesome book into an embarrassment.
Oh how i'd love to know what Christopher Paolini REALLY thinks of the movie, i mean if the fans hate it what about the writer?

sorry for adding twice :S
I agree with alqx!
The Novel was fantastic. The second was even better. But the way they made the game and the movie was just rediculous. I have another correction to add. The 'Urgals' we're supposed to be Ox like beasts twice the size of any man, Not a bald, dim witted human. Long story short. They should have spent more time on the movie, it had alot of potential that just wasn't reached. The Director of the movie probably hasn't even read the books!

Basically, I have the same things to add as the rest of you. Although I have to say I was extremely disappointed with the way they portrayed Arya. What happened to her strong character? Her and Eragon are basically developping an Arwen/Aragorn relationship in the movie. Thats not supposed to happen (not yet anyway). They even missed out on her pointed ears. Also in the end when she goes to Ellesméra and leaves Eragon behind was upsetting. And Saphira's personality.. She wouldn't have let Eragon order her like that..'I'm the rider and I say we go.' I mean, whats up with that? Also, the absence of dwarves bothers me. They are really important in the book, and they're not even in the movie. Eragon even becomes a member of a dwarf clan in Eldest. And the way Eragon found out that Brom was a rider disappointed me. Brom just let Eragon push him around and let him reveal his gedwey ignesia. Eragon, in the book, writes on Brom's grave that he was like a father to him, but you wouldn't know that by watching the movie. And Gertrude!!! They leave her out. It may not seem important now, but in Eldest thats how Jeod (who was also excluded from the movie) recognizes Roran and the other members of Carvahall. I was sorely disappointed with this movie, even in the first 5 minutes with the bad narration. I absolutely LOVED the book and I agree that it seems like the director did not read the book. It is currently my favorite book and while I didn't expect the movie to be exactly like the book, I didn't expect it to be this bad.
Cheers;
Kia
I completely agree with alqx from the first page. Much of the story was left out or changed for the purposes of Hollywood. Ive read some horrible reviews about the movie and somewhat agree with them. However, this should not be said against the book. Eragon is a wonderful book that I would recommend to any reader.
I was reading the comments and saw someone with my exact feelings toward the movie. They said they loved the book, which I read 3 years ago, and they said when they heard there was to be a movie coming out they were extremely excited. I found out there was to be a movie over a year ago and have been waiting with much anticipation. When the movie came out, I went to see the first showing of it at our local theatre and was soooo disappointed after watching it. I thought this movie was to be based on a book. I was wrong. They changed everything and about the only thing they had right was the names, and a few events. I vote the remake this movie now and beat up the old producers. PS: I got the game for my birthday and the game sucks too. What a waste of a Birthday Gift and Birthday party. Considering I went to see Eragon on my birthday, I would rather have watched Barney all day than have the wonderful book torn down by such a horrible movie.
I saw the movie yesterday and loved it! I haven't read the book though and from reading previous reviews I am guessing that the book is even better...it's really surprising how everyone that has read the book hates the movie! I guess we will have to see.
I loved the book and looked forward to the movie. Paid top dollar for the ticket to find the dragon looked like Dragonheart without Sean Connery's voice. A dragon should never look like a bird, tsk. Terrible special effects, including almost all of the scenery including the stronghold with laughable twin falls. Wooden acting, horrible directing and cutting. No character development, condensing the plot so that you had to have read the book to figure out relationships. I thought perhaps it was now time to film the Dragonriders of Pern, but not with this director. How about some ILM effects instead of Eastern European schlock.
yea... i agree with most people here, the book was excellent. the movie... was utter crap. i mean, even without reading the book, the 5 friends i went with all thought it was crap. the first 10 minutes of the movie, it has already shown galbatorix... why? and his acting? HOLY CRAP! that made me want to vomit. 'I suffer without my STONE!!' ... what...the crap. they couldnt even get blatant and important details right, like, ya know, zar'roc having a ruby in its pommel. they set the movie up so that IF they make the second one, it is ALREADY ruined. if you read the book, you know what im talking about, no scar, eragon doesnt go to ellesmeria (i know, i spelled it wrong) murtaugh and the twins never disappeared... (well... rightfully the twins never showed up in the first place) they will have to write their own book and call it eragon 2, just to match up their random details. gah...
oh, and one more thing, what was up with hrothgar? wasnt that the guy from star trek... with horrible acting skills... and i am almost positive they used the costume set from the scorpion king movie... hrothgar's armor...specifically that random headdress and how he looked barechested...
This is my seconds post..
Thx Amy for pointing out the things i got wrong in my first post.
As for the Ancient language part, I think u got it wrong. I meant that it wasn't really used as speech in the Movie.
In my first post i was really angry. But after seeing so many people that agree with me and feels the same way I actually feel much better. But that doesn't mean I'm not dissapointed. The graphics are great to me, but the point isn't in the graphics.. Anyone could just go and watch LotR or any movie and replay the same scene again and again if you like the graphics that much.
A novel is a novel, a movie is a movie. Indeed.
A novel can use many words to describe the story while the movie has to depend on the visual display:'Background, Swords, Characthers, Elves, Roadsigns, MAPS, Magic etc..' or audio:'Characthers' speech, Narrator'.
I think that there really wouldn't be much hope for 'Eldest' movie unless..
1) Eragon movie remake ( I hope so... )
2) Eldest movie based on Eragon movie ( Pointless, there isn't much of the first movie to follow up for, might as well call it 'Eragon 2' )
3) Eldest movie based on Eragon Novel ( Give up on Eragon movie, learn from that total failuire/disgrace and do a better job this time )
Suggestions for remake
-Fix the storyline ( do i need say more? see the previous reviews )
-Introduce the map at some point in the movie ( allows the viewers' to have a sense of direction/location, giving them a chance to think about the movie, like: 'What lies around this little house Eragon lives in? How large is the Spine? Could they have taken another route?', making it seem more REAL, a form of invisible mental interaction between certain viewers that give more thought into it. )
-Focus more on inter-characthers' relations ( The best way to know a person is to observe how he/she behaves around other people, and the way he/she interacts with others )
-Less cheeziness ( Eragon is NOT a comedy, and the cold jokes are really much annoying as anti-climaxes )
With these done, I dare say that Eragon fans would be pleased.
Is it possible for a remake of Eragon movie? Is there a law that prevents another director from making a movie of the same name? I hope not. I don't think there has been ever a remake of any movie, someone correct me please. As long as this 'Poor-Movie-Degrade-Good-Novel' problem isn't solved, I think the only reason any Eragon fan would watch Eldest movie would be to see how much worse the storyline
could get, with some other bunch of friends and laugh throughout the movie( As in like, watching a comedy )
REMAKE.
I forgot to include this in my previous post.
I think that the reason Eragon was so poorly done was partially due to another theory i made up.. (which is possible)
Done Too EARLY.
Eragon movie came out shortly after the Eldest book came out. Don't you think it is quite impossible to read Eldest within that short period of time and change the entire movie?
Maybe the director acutally READ the novel Eragon. But he probably didn't even know there was such a book Eldest coming out (if he's blind because it's just at the back page of the book)
So like what Balio Bathiche says in his/her post: 'this movie is obviously just to make money; because nearly everyone who reads the book is going to love it - and so its already garunteed that they're goign to watch the movie - isn't it? ... ... pathetic, they don't care about us fans of the book - they just make a crappy film which everyone thinks will be good because the book was amazing.'
So maybe last minute Eldest came out, and maybe the director read Eldest, but just wouldn't spend his precious money/effort/time to change the movie to fit the storyline.
He wouldn't lose a thing, EVERYONE who read Eragon would watch the movie. By the time they realise it sucks, the money is already made. SO? ...
The book was one of my favortites and i Believes the movie to be good as well. Listen viewers who enjoyed reding Erangon....be prepared. The movie was flat out all wrong. It was embarrasing. Only an hour and a half to explain an entire 494 pg book. The movie was rushed and totally butchered the plot. Dont expect much from this movie.
Our first family outing for the school holidays in Australia was this movie. That is because both parents and our two eldest children had read the first two books, and we had all loved them. Yeh yeh - they are derivative, yeh yeh they are not that well written. But reading them was like going on a fantastic theme park ride. When you get off, your legs are shaking, you can't breathe properly, and you cannot wait to get on again.
As we drove home, we compared notes as to when we first started to feel sick with disappointment about this stinker of a movie. Dad - 5 minutes, mum and eldest child - when Saphira grew up (about 15 minutes?), middle child thought it wasn't too bad, youngest child just got bored very quickly.
We won't be going to see the second movie unless something drastic changes - how could they even make a second movie though? What plot would they follow?
I have never posted onto a website like this before, but I am so distressed about this rubbish that I just had to tell someone. I have also written to Fox to let them know how I feel.
Thanks for listening
Heather
I loved it!!
Second Post:)
Maybe it would be possible to further influence them into re-making the movie by sending in letters, as Heather did. Its something I'm going to try because I want to see something done!!
Just one little comment! Saphira was the only amazing thing in the movie. I mean she was a perfectly designed dragon, but they probably spent so much money building Saphira that they run out of money to pay someone to read the books!!!
i love the movie but i haven't read the book so i don't care..ya anyways...........
Hey, Leave the movie alone! I haven't seen it yet but it can't be to bad, there have to be worse movies out there. Dude, I mean, why don't you all try make a movie about Eragon your selves, hey? Then see what feed back you get. Making a movie is hard, I know that the three books are ment to follow on, and the first and second books do it quite well, but what about the people that havent read the book yet, you need to look at that. Besides, if you want to say that there is a lot of the book missing, complain to Harry Potter's makers! How much of the book do they miss out! But there is always a next movie until the seventh (whitch is the last of the books!)
I'm really sad about the Eragon movie. It was so disappointing. I think I could have done a better job casting some of the characters, directing and writing the screenplay. They cut out and changed so many things. The whole movie felt like a giant rush. Some things are very crucial to the next movies. They left out some characters too such as Orik, Elva, Jeod and Katrina off the top of my head. Orik is a faithful companion to Eragon in Eragon and Eldest. Elva save Nasuada and in an interview CP said that she had an inportant role in the last book. Jeod is the person that breaks the news that Eragon is adragon rider to Roran and helps all of Carvahall get to Surda. Katrina is the reason that Roran left, not to escape being enlisted in the army as the movie says. A girl was listed on the officaial movie site to play Katrina but she never appeared in the movie. Also much was left out of Angela's fortune telling, things that will affect the other books/movies and the wise words of Solembum were not included either, let alone Solembum himself. Those words of advice will be very important in the last book/movie. Arya, Brom and Galbatorix all know that the egg has hatched straight away in the movie and Galbatorix even knows who he is and where he live. What the hell? That never happens in the book and there was no reason to change it. Also Brom and Eragon don't set out to the Varden straight away or start fleeing the Ra'zac, Eragon is pursuing them to get revenge, not running from them. There are too many other mistakes, changes and things cut out to cover all of them. But if you've read the book and seen the movie you'll know what I'm talking about. Oh one last thing, it says in the book and movie that dragons die if their rider does but how did Galbatorix's second dragon Shruikan survive when it's original rider was killed? If you know for sure and aren't just guessing, write a comment and say. Okay, I'm done now.
'AccuracyWisherDec 16th, 2006 - 18:40:26
It was torture. Nothing less than torture.'
........I love you for this quote, I really do.
Just a little 'letting off some steam'
-no were-cat,
-no huge rose gem,
-the movie takes place in 3 days (from the time saphira hatches to the time the movie is over.
-if I remember correctly the urgals (or maybe it was the razacs) had 'beaks',
-The scar that Murtagh got was a slash across his BACK!
-I really didn’t see any dwarves,
-'Eragon is dashing!' (Quote from my friend as eragon puts on his armor)
-Saphira doesn’t hatch in winter (movie)
-apparently Eragon knew just where the Arya was,
-and this is the biggest 'why did they do that' NO KATRENIA!!!
-Roran doesn’t go to fight in the army,
-(little detail that doesn’t matter) no traveling sales people
-eragon is 15 years old not 17,
-eragons legs don’t hurt after riding on saphira,
And if someone already posted this stuff sorry, I just stopped reading the posts around page 4
Oh my God, after waiting for months and months for this movie to come out, I almost burst into tears when it was over. I have never in my life been more bitterly disappointed. So many characters were left out and so much of the book's storyline is missing, I can't see how they are going to do a sequel. Where is Roran's fiance (the butcher's daughter)?? Where is Jeod?? What happened to Angela's cat?? And for the love of god somebody please tell me what is up with Saphira taking off into the sky and then returning 15 seconds later fully grown?? Where are the dwarves?? Where is the stone that Saphira shattered when she flew through it the first time she ever breathed fire?? What the hell was that thing that Durza was riding at the end?
I didn't expect it to strictly adhere to the book, but this movie looks like the screenwriter only read every other chapter of the book. I can't believe Paolini signed off on this piece of trash.
If you loved the book, you will HATE the movie. If you liked the movie, it's because you haven't read the book, and you will like the book so much better if you read it.
hi everyone.
been really really excited about this film ever since heard bout it coming out, ut after reading all these review about it and how bad it is, im not so sure i want to see it. I want to, but i dont want it to ruin my imagination. but i want to see it because i loved the book. what do i do?!?!?!?!
please leave some ideas
thanks xxx
Your all just jealous. I'd love to see you all put something better together and i think Christopher Paolini deserves a great award for this fantastic movie. Now i may be a young child but i know a great film when i see one and this is the best once ive seen yet!
ummm, i dont think christopher directed the movie, i think he only wrote the book. i think someone else directed it.
If I were you I wouldn't bother wihht the movie. Iread the book, Thought it was the best book i ever read and the movie waws a complete let down cos they left out some of the most important bits like (if you havent read the book look away now) The slaughter at Yazuac, Tierm, the hadarac desert Dras leonaAnd all the other bits in that area like helgrind. if i were Christopher Paolini i would completely redo the movie it would cost alot but the books are so good that he must of made loads from them.
if you havent read the book i would see it because what i head from people who havent read the book is th thy thought it was brilliant
Should have seen James Bond what the hell was going on in the film???
The book's are breathtakingly good and the movie missed out about 3 major towns dropped more charecters than i can think of and the ending kinda sucked. All in all This christmas I'd watch the grinch.
WEll the book is great not my favorite but but really is up there the movie is badly done rushed and kind of corny. what's with the urgals? I expected fur covered horned warlike creatures not some pub regular with terrible face paint's. if you haven't read the books this may ruin it Also where was?
The Twins-nameless err they were the ones who betrayed the varden and were practically controlling the army in book 2.Roran also impales their skulls with his hammer.
The werecat-solembum he was important gave vital information that the book highlighted 'when all else fails this will be your final hope' sorry eragon
Murtagh-He was there but who on earth was he?? He looked pretty Murtaghish but really you saw him for 3 minutes saving Eragon.
orik or osmething- Eragons Dwarfen guide mentioned at the end of book 1 and frequently in the second book beggining.
Carvahall-sorry can't mention them all there was the healer gertude horst(mentioned in rorans travells in book 2)
that's just a few people left out i could mention more but not in detail so heres a few i can just think of on the spot as well as the ones above.
The slavers who attack Eragon and Murtagh
Brom's friend the trader (can't remember his name)
Cadoc and snowfire. Cadoc was Eragons first horse a good one and named after his grandfather snowfire was his second horse He got after brom died Eragon felt he must look after it because Brom swore to protect it. The legacy of the horse protecter falls onto eragon now.
Hmm i've kind of gone on here but if this is just a few problems with the charecters i cant imagine the size of a full critical list.
Your all just jealous. I'd love to see you all put something better together and i think Christopher Paolini deserves a great award for this fantastic movie. Now i may be a young child but i know a great film when i see one and this is the best once ive seen yet!
I credit Christopher paloni fu;;y for his marvellous piece of work but he wasn't involved in the movie at all i don't belive theproducers read the book it was so bad.
Hey im back Read everything and i guess it's all covered. But there was indeed a map in the fiilm unfortunately you could only see it for a few seconds because galbatorix decided to rip it down at the end revealing his dragon. Thought that bit was hillarious. I mean Galbatorix isn't meant to have unexpected anger out burst's that ruins the whole Ultimate evilness And not being a short tempered idiot. Also Saphirias egg looked teriible. WTF is her transformation about??? It rins all the dragon lore described in detail in the book now it's. Chuck a baby in the air and you get an adult. If this leads to an increase in child death's fox will need a good lawyer.
personally i think this movie was complete dissapointment. the special effects were great but the plot barely matched the book.Eragon doesnt chase the Razak like he does in the book to avenge the death of his uncle he is chased by them and Brom and eragon never go to Teirm and meet Jerod to find the location the of the Razak hiding place they just go strait to the Varden which was a complete let down. The movie only showed a third of what the book was and Murtagh actually wanted to go to the Varden in the movie what was with that and the worst let down of all was the Dwarvin capital of Farthen Dur in the book it is this wonderful beautiful city and in the movie it is a bunch of bamboo huts and the twins( the evil Varden Magicians) werent even in the movie. DOnt know about you but the director in this movie did NOT do the book justice
Eragon the movie hater you are so right i agree 200%
Overall the book was exellent. Best book i've ever read , probably. I havent read LOTR or HP , but i have Eragon and Eldest and thought they were exellent. To those of you who say Eragon has some likenesses to LOTR and HP , i would agree , but CP was only 16 when he wrote the book!
Now... this movie is an issue. At first , i thought i could go in forgetting the book , and pretend like the movie wasnt even based on the book. Lord , that did not work out. Everything was wrong. The WHOLE storyline was wrong. How are they going to manage Eldest? Actually , i do not believe it is possible. They left out Katrina , didnt introduce Arya as an Elf.. and many more things i cant remember at the moment. Oh , yes , The star on the childs forehead. The blessing he gave her that turned out to be a curse. That has a big role in Eldest aswell. And the star that the dwarves had , that Saphira knocked through. Oh , yes , and the scar that Durza gave Eragon in the battle. And last , even though i havent mentioned other numerous flaws , is that you didnt get to know the characters. You got a couple glimpses of Murtagh , who , surprisingly plays a very large role in Eldest , was not given enough credit. They may have skimmed over Eragon , but surely they did not read it nor Eldest. I read over my comment again and realize i am a very large complainer. Lol , if you've read this i am surprised and give you kudos for taking the time!
i am a big fan of book but the movie was a big dissopointmant it did not follow the book they cut out the scenes no solumbum why is arya awake on the whole journey it is a short film but i still love the book

The movie sucked. Even if I hadn't read the book I wouldent have know wtf was going on! I mean Murtagh is just this person who is seen stalking eragon then saves his life.... wait a minute who saw him in the first village in the film??
Why didn't he save eragon when the urgals attacked (which wasn't even in the book) Also the twins are vital ll that happened was to the film they are the ones who almost destroy the varden for goodness sake! The urgals looked terrible and the razzac were completely off target. In the next film they are going to have to do another fly in the air and get struck by lightining thing because i don' see a creature entirely made of bug's turning into a bird dragon thing. Another problem with the razzac. It would seem that in the book a good stab would kill one but In the film Brom manages to put a sword through one. I don't belive he killed it all that happened was the bugs walked away. Fathen dur sucked it was ment to be a system of tunnels and mountians instead it's a valley fulol of guy's in head scarves. I have nothing agains arabians but why the hell are the varden all wearing them?? It's not like naybody's going to snitch on them seeing as the twins have alreaedy been bumped off. As somebody said earlier solembum was major and angelaa looked like a belley dancer for god's sake. The film came out here recent'y so im not sure if they were going for the christmas theme.
Eragon has been one of my favourite books since it first came out a while ago.
When I saw the movie i was so dissapointed because it didnt hardly follow the plot at all. The acting was bad, the lines were cheesy, and most of the original plot from the novel was scrambled. The new plot was almost as bad as the plot to most adult movies, and there was no sex....
Worst movie ever.
Chistopher I hope you read this. What were you thinking? Was it worth the money to betray your book on that level. Did the director, or producers even read your book. I would be ashamed and sue, if it were my book. How in the world are they going to tie in the second book. They left everthing important out. Rorans love, Arya's coldness to Eragon, and Orik, and his dwarve friends were did they go. A rant from a disgusted movie goer. Ashamed for you Mr. Paolini
Omg......OMG.......THIS IS THE MOST ******* BAD MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN, THE ****** UP THE BOOK SO BAD. PEOPLE WHO HAVENT READ THE BOOK BUT WATCHED THE MOVIE PROBOBLY WILL THINK ITS BAD EVEN!!!!!! Paolini is a duma if he doesn't do something about this *†. The books were freaking awesome! This movie was so dam stupid, honestly, everyone that had a part in this movie and HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE MAKING OF THIS MOVIE SHOULD BE JUST SLAPPED!!!!! My God, I could've made a better movie with a video camera, and a paper dragon and characters! They should get a better script a better director, better actors, except who acted for Brom, he was good, and REDO THIS ENTIRE FREAKING MOVIE!!!!! I HATE IT!!!!! THEY ****** IT UP!!
Having loved Eragon and Eldest, I was so excited for this movie, I went to see it on its debut night with a group of 20 people. We all wanted to leave within the first 5 minutes. We stuck it out knowing it was going to be a bad movie, in the hope that it would at least be mildly entertaining. It was not. I left not only disappointed but outright angry; I don't think I have ever seen such an incredibly blasphemous movie in my lifetime. My friend summed it up the best: 'Remember when we loved playing mario bros, then saw that movie that was completely irrelevant and had nothing to do with anything? This is deja vu man.' This is the exact same situation. Someone had the bright idea to cash in on the good name of a successful series, and made a horrendous movie with the same title simply to make a quick buck. Well, they succeeded in their endeavor and proved once again that the commercialization of things absolutely ruins them. When the sole motivation of making a movie is to turn a quick profit, the product suffers. There was not a single redeeming quality to this movie.
While reading Eldest so many more questions come to mind. What about his wound inflicted by Durza? what about Idiadar mithrim. What about Hrothgar and Orik. What about the next Jouney to elves, Arya's already gone. Now a rant about the worst movie ever. Didn't Murtagh fear the varden. In the movie 'to the varden' . It's so far out of charcter that it's the anti-Murtaugh. The exact opposite. The Razac have beetle like eyes and beaks, but not in the stupid movie. Brom was already dead when they rescued Araya. He was killed by the Razac. Araya is old wise strong, and distant to Eragon. Roran was going the Therinsford, and there was no soldiers in Carvahall. Responding to another comment, I was also thinking surdans, and varden were middle eastern. I could live with Ajihad's character,in the movie, but that Nasuada as the future leader, no way. One more reason they were not looking to Eldest. Angela in the movie and no solembum need I say more. Once again asking if the producers, writers, and directors even read the book. Still not knowing what they were thinking. Also still very pissed, after the expectation, and let down. Book Fan
The first thing that came to my mind when I began watching the movie (past my frenzied rage, that is) was:
Did Christopher Paolini even get to see this movie made? Or at the least, get to watch it before it was released?
The beginning was horrifying, the middle was enraging, and at the end I just couldn't scream loud enough to release my frustration.
There are too many things wrong with this movie to list, but I see that one person has already listed a lot of them. So I'll just finish their list.
-They didn’t even show Solembum in the movie.
-Angela is supposed to look a little more tom-boyish, hello. Not like some weird sort of glittery drama queen. AND she was supposed to be in Tierm(sp?) very close to Jeod. (Yeah I know the fortunetelling was an important detail in the book, but they didn't mind missing all the other important details, now did they??)
-In Gil'ead(sp?) the town was actually made of humans as far as I know, and the jail/dungeon was run by Galbatorix's men, not by Urgals. The Shade runs it partly, but came because they were holding Eragon and Arya.
-That Shade needs a new pair of lips. I mean, geez, he needs something to sneer with at the beginning of the book!
-Not to mention, the Shade was supposed to look pale, had red eyes, red hair, and look pretty well-groomed I think, but menacing.
-Galbatorix made sure, all throughout the book, that Eragon was NOT killed, because if he was killed it would risk Saphira dying with him, therefore preventing the rise of a new band of corrupt Riders, or something like that he wanted to do. He also wanted to make Eragon join his side if he could catch him first.
-If I’m correct, the scar on Eragon’s palm should have been a sort of silver oval, not a little swirly thingy.
-They cut out MORE than two chunks of the movie.
-They added unnecessary parts that shouldn’t have been added at all, but could have looked a little less retarded if they actually fit into that thing they call a movie.
-Brom and Eragon didn’t practice with sticks, they practiced with wooden swords Brom carved.
-Horst isn’t even shown in the movie, neither are any other of Carvahall’s characters except for Sloan.
-Garrow’s house is supposed to look like a real, though a small bit drafty, house. Not a pigsty.
-Garrow, Roran, and Eragon were supposed to be the only really poor people in Carvahall, everyone else has real houses too.
-Urgals have spiraling horns, and they’re bigger, and don’t look especially humanoid.
-The Ra'zac aren't demons from the bowels of hell with maggots feasting on their festering corpses (eww) that you could summon at will... They're larva in this freaky kind of black carapace, with beaks, bug eyes, and an anthropomorphic figure, which must keep eating humans until they hatch. Which takes hundreds and hundreds of years.
-The second book has got the soldiers in Carvahall, not the first. Duh. Get your facts straight.
-In the movie, Eragon tells Brom he's seventeen, but he's actually fifteen at the time. SUPER-DUH. Someone needs a script-editor. D:
Yeah, I know very well that the movie should never be expected to be the same as the book, but this is just plain ridiculous. If I am correct, the book Eragon topped Harry Potter in the ratings at one point. But it looks like the director of this movie either didn't bother READING the book, or just can't read!
I know for a fact that not one person that actually fully understood the book Eragon is going to be able to watch this movie without wanting to send a hate mail or two.
As for me... I wanted to send a hate mail as long as the book.
That is all.
Oh, and I forgot to add....
If they were worried about fitting all of the book in one movie, why did they only make it about an hour and forty-five minutes long? (I timed it) Well, here's an idea. They could have just made the equivalent of a few volumes to books for the movie. Like, first part, Eragon finds Saphira, Ra'zac come, Garrow dies, Brom rescues him and they set off together to avenge Garrow and find the Varden. Second part, and yeah you know what happens then. I've never watched a movie put into sections like that, but it could very well work if it means Eragon brought to justice.
I've read a few of these comments and I must agree with the similarity to Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc. But these critiques are missing the point.
That is the original foundation to a good adventure book. Without that guideline, adventure books would be little to nothing. Novels made by that rule is just what naturally appeals the human mind, especially the young ones. It's not theft to borrow something that isn't nailed down to start your writing career and give you a good name, is it? And so what if they continue using it? Phillip Pullman is an incredibly independent writer, but he used another set of similar guidelines to write His Dark Materials.
K, didn't think so.
I've enjoyed the book (although the plot of it was a bit predictable), but the movie stank. It thoroughly reminded me of the new Star Wars. Huge chunks of the storyline that made the book interesting were omitted - condensing the plot to be painfully stereotyped. The dialog was horrible, rivaling the opening sequence of the star wars episode II (gag). How the writers managed to concost conversations consisting solely of cliches is beyond me. The star cast was underused and the directing left much to be desired. There were too many shots where nothing was happening besides the change of Eragon's facial expressions - and while he's cute, there really was no point to spending so much time on his face at the expense of the plot. Plus, he's no Kevin Spacey yet. I wasn't impressed by the actress who played Arya either (whose character was entirelly undeveloped). She kept twitching strangely throughout...
There were also too many sweeping shots of beautiful landscapes reminiscent of LOTR but lacking action (mountains, more mountains, more mountains... zzzzzz...). And lastly, the director is too enamoured with special effects and overdoes it. As if ... 'flying dragon is cool - lets stick it here, here, and here, and here...' Get on with the plot already!
So in synopsis - this movie is the caliber of the sci-fi networs special (about as bad as their Earthsea version) so see it at your own risk.
The book is ok, but a mature reader would find Silmarillion much more intriguing. Don't waste your $$$ on the hardcover.
I have read the book and seen the film, while I felt the film was short in comparison to the book I did still enjoy it. Maybe I looked at the film a different way who knows, maybe it's bias because I love dragons to bits, have done ever since playing D&D in my younger days. I watched the film more for Saphira than anything else and watched her go from that cute little critter that hatched to the rather well done full grown dragon she became.
Jeremy Irons was great as Brom, I felt that bit of casting was fantastic, as was Saphira's voice, who gave her that female quality without sounding too soppy.
As Paolini had said himself I believe, he wanted her to be the best friend anyone could have, and I think that still came across in the movie as well as the book, and was far more important than whether it followed the plot to the letter, which let's face it no film ever does.
Even LOTR missed huge chunks out from the book in the films. And they crane-lifted elves into the battle for Helm's Deep in that, where they should never have been. So I knew they plot would be screwed up and I guess I watched knowing that and consequently enjoyed the film. 10/10 for trying and 11/10 for Saphira who obviously had a lot of work done to make her right.
This movie... ugh. It's good, if I hadn't read the book, but I shall list all the things that are different from the book and basically ruin the story line-
-Um.. Saphira MAGICALLY TRANSFORMS (ooo!) in the clouds.
-Ra'zac don't look anything like they were described in the book
-I'm pretty sure, Teirm was somewhere in there... wasn't it where Eragon got his reading with Angela, not in Daret, which also turns into the place they get ambushed by 50 Urgals (it's supposed to be 2) instead of Yazuac... i think. Angela's supposed to be old... Oh, and Solembum too.
-Eragon doesn't discover Brom is a rider until he dies, and Arya isn't awake at the time.
-There's like 1 dwarf in the movie, and he's indian. Not being racist, its just strange.
- What happened to the Desert?
-I'm pretty sure Eragon killed Durza in Tronjheim under the Isildar Milthrim... not on a black ugly magic smoky dragon thingy, and he never got his scar, which plays a huge part in the 2nd book.
BUT THE BIGGEST OOPSY IS THIS: (just becuase he's the main character and I think you might want to get his appearance right)
Ed Speleers has blond HIGHLIGHTED hair and blue eyes but in Eldest it says that he has Brown hair and BROWN eyes..
Just a suggestion? Do some research, idiots.
This is what I found while casual searching..

Go to this websites and you'll probably find out WHY the movie did not turn out as expected.
For your information, the director's name is Stefen Fangmeier.
Quotes from http://www.londonnet.com/ln/out/ent/cinema_eragon.html
'Although this is the German/American filmmaker's first feature as director, he is known in the industry for his mastery of visual effects. Fangmeier worked with renowned filmmaker George Lucas for fifteen years at Industrial Light and Magic (ILM). He has been visual effects supervisor on many films, which include ... ... He is a three-time BAFTA award winner and has been Oscar-nominated four times.' -Which explains why the movie has such great focus on graphics instead of storyline. Also, as his first time directing, you cannot expect a wonderful Eragon movie.
To the director: 'What was the appeal of this story and film for you?'
Reply: 'What I liked about it apart from the special effects and action is that it has tremendous heart. It is a fantastic coming of age story and it deals with destiny. A farm boy was chosen to become a hero and a dragon rider. He has to rise to the occasion and struggles with that challenge and he has a great character arc, becoming the dragon rider that he was meant to be.' -Any comments? I don't really know what to say..
What approach did you take to directing the film?
A: “At some point you just have to stay calm and ride through every storm. With the actors, it was all about being sensitive towards them. I think as a director you have to be very supportive, almost in a paternal way. Even the most experienced actors have to trust you and understand what direction you are taking. They need to relate to you. So articulation of what you are looking for from them is very important, I think. I think I managed to get really good performances out of the actors – even someone like Ed Speleers who had never been in front of a camera.' -Maybe he wasn't as 'Money-Hungry' as some previous comments, including mine, have stated.
Joss Stone, the British soul singer, has a small role as a fortuneteller, what does she bring to the film do you think?
A: 'I like her music very much, so I knew how talented she was in that way and I think she adds a lovely female presence. I think she is a little bit of a fresh and surprising choice. She has fantastic makeup and looks quite different. She has a certain power and projects very well because she was a performer already. She plays a mysterious, slightly weird fortuneteller. Her eyes change and she put in different color contact lenses so it looks as though she is going into a trance and gazing into the future. She tells Eragon what is going to happen to him and presents him with a riddle.' -The director misinterpreted the book, causing Angela to look like a 'belly-dancer' as some of you have commented
What does Sienna Guillory bring to her role as the elf princess?
A: 'She brought a tremendous amount of energy and spirit to the part. She was so enthusiastic. She would say to me: “I am great on a horse, I can fight.” She was fantastic and found an inner strength and confidence. She is also absolutely gorgeous looking. And she was so good and powerful in the fighting, even though she is so petite. She had to be a little ethereal because she is immortal, she is an elf and unreachable for Eragon, who loves her and we had to have tension between the two of them.' -Again, another misinterpretation by the director, causing Arya's characther to be totally off..
I won't be putting anymore examples here. If you really care then go and visit this webpage http://www.londonnet.com/ln/out/ent/cinema_eragon.html
In my opinion, the director has good potential but is too amateur to take up a Movie such as Eragon. I have been mistaken in some of my previous angry comments in my view of the director. He is too focussed on visual effects; he should direct other movies where visual effects are the focus of the movie. If another more experienced director was to have taken up the job to direct Eragon, I am sure it would have been much better.
End.
Wow, I was so dissapointed after I saw the movie version of Eragon. The book was wonderful, yes there were some similarities to Lord of the Rings, but there are similarities in the other fantasy books I read as well. That is why I read fantasy in the first place. I was actually embarrassed after I saw the movie with my husband who has not read the book, he must think I have the worst taste in novels ever!
The movie failed to develop any of the characters and even managed to make me, (someone who could not put the book down) not care about any of the them; whether they died, if the Varden were successful, or even if Eragon and Saphira survived. The Varden were not even given but a second of screen time and what happened to the dwarves who helped the Varden and lived under the mountain?
In the movie, Eragon did not have any trouble with the minimal training recieved by Brom, learning magic and defeating the urgles seemed like second nature to this farm boy. In the book, you begin to care for Eragon because of the struggles he faces with his training and drastic change of lifestyle. There are so many differences in the book and movie that calling the big screen version 'Eragon' is ridiculous.
I would have opted for a puppet dragon if more money and time would have been put forth in the detail of the overall story and characters. The movie was a mere 1 1/2 hours long, it was a rushed mess. Lord of the Rings was a much longer movie, yet when watching it, the time flies by. Watching Eragon seemed like five hours of humility. I especially liked the leader of the Vardens character who concentrated a little too hard trying to memorize his lines and came across as a dopy extra reading from cue cards.
Hollywood has once again taken a great book and turned it into a flashy, big screen waste of money.
eragon is a good book, but i wont kick up a fuss if u dont like it. dif ppl like dif stuff. 4 example: i am hooked on action/thriller/adventure/sci-fi/fantasy and love eragon(the book) whereas my sister hates all of those genre's and wont read a single book that is not a picture book and she's 13. there u go. problem solvered. actually, personally i am dreading seeing the movie from what i have heard and read about it. i swear, if the movie destroys the book it will make the book look bad, as though that's what weve been reading, but its not.
sleep with one eye open. Arya_girl (aka rider_chic)
well, this is what happens when people try to make a movie from such a special and complex story.
I saw the movie first, and then I read the book.
I will never watch that movie again!!!
Sure, nice animated dragon!
But what about the story??
The movie in nothing compared to the book!!
Won't get repetitive as just about everything was covered already. Book good, movie abysmal. What I will get into is limited attention spans of the reviewer's 'round here. Let me first state I have read both Eragon and Eldest and am of the opinion Paolini has the potential of being a good author in the future, but these books are rather formulaic, predictable and convuluted (nice trick). However they are creative with solid characters. They are NOT literature, so what? Who didn't know that before they picked the book up?
Do Paolini's books seem Tolkieneque? Dunno, bout that maybe it is more like Anne McCaffry's 'Dragon Riders of Pern' where the dragon selects one of a limited field of people to form a life long immediate telepathic bond too. Hmm Tolkien . . . Didn't he spend most of his life writing the saga that became so important to so many? Wasn't Tolkien a professor of language and literature at Oxford University? Gee do you think he knew all kinds of middle english literature and mythology? Tolkien's stories are steeped in it, thus he isn't ripping off tolkien he's ripping off mythology or ancient anonymous bards, but with more modern language.
Ripping off 'Star Wars', the holy land of Sci-fi? One gripe I have read is (paraphrased) 'A young farm boy is mentored by an old man of the order' Aren't mentors usually older and more experinced with something to teach? Wouldn't they, by necessity, have been affiliated with whatever order that was to teach the new ones coming anew? I mean fate and destiny are often necessary to exlpain why such things are happening to these people. As for the whine about a magic/force rip off. The concept of the force was ripped off by Lucas from Taoism (started 6th century ad) so is not original to 'Star Wars', sorry.
Basically it boils down to give the kid a break, he might surprise you some day.
I don't know whether my own opinion is valid or not seeing as how this sounds like a mature bunch talking about this book and movie, and I have just turned 17 today (Hoorah!). Actually I just today came from seeing Eragon. I had long before the movie read both Eragon and Eldest and was extremely excited for this movie I was about to see with four of my other friends. I payed attention to every detail and every word and it was the greatest insult to Christopher Paolini's (if that's how you spell it) great novel. I personally loved reading both books, and yes I will admit that I am a Harry Potter fan. My friends were laughing at me for how I was reacting after having finished watching the movie in theatres. I had noticed about everything that 'alqx' had mentioned earlier that the movie had cut out entirely. Having read books before and then watched the movies, theres always some cuts in the final production. But for this movie, like it has already been said (but to greater extent) they completely butchered it! They took so much out of it that it ruined what made the story brilliant to begin with. There was no one part besides those adorable beaty dragon eyes of Saphira's that I had liked in that movie. I feel the strong urge to complain to whoever thought it wise to organise the movie in this way, but like my voice will make any difference.
Flabbergasted and Disappointed
Hey. I loved the movie! But I was disappointed that they cut out so much and changed some of it. If they make a second movie they're going to have to explain a lot. The movie was pretty good and suspenseful, and the actors were great! Bye!
Yes, everyone who said the movie sucked pretty much covered it but i am so mad i have to say something. They butchered the plot line, many of the characters were badly portrayed or not included, saphira's egg looked so fake and many of lines were overly dramatic and unbelievable. I mean, 'You will trust me dragonrider'? Seriously! I am so glad that so many people agree with me. I couldn't stand it if people actually thought it was good. I was so dissapointed. I suppose that someone who hasn't read the book might like it but any true eragon fan must be severly dissapointed. I can't believe Christopher Paolini let themn get away with it.
NT I don't see your book out there instead of saying they copy each other why don't you go and right your self and try to not copy every single story line out there in the world.
just another quiky wasn't Arya an elf? in the movie she didn't look like an elf to me.
and I won't go to the movie and donate just to see if I was rong about the elf and by the way happy new year
after all that i have read i don't know if to be excited or to be scared to see the movie i've seen a few clips and agree that: Arya doesn't look like an elf, saphira's voice is off,and the ruby in Zar'ock is wrong.
its the typical fantasy story
hero saving the world//dragons//good vs evil etc.etc
also eragon's 17 isnt he?
