El Cantante -

It's the story of salsa singer Hector Lavoe, one of the biggest Spanish language singers of the 1970's. Like so many singers of the era, his life was marred by tragedy and heavy-duty heroine addiction. He grew up in abject poverty, his son was killed in an accidental shooting, his marriage was troubled, and he suffered from severe depression. In the end, he was left penniless and dying from AIDS.

i can't wait to see this movie. the salsa movement in the 70's was powerful, with fania all stars, willie, hector, madison square, puerto rican power and 8 tracks! i think jen & marc are passionate about their work and from the movie clip i've seen, i think the movie will be a hit!

I have been waiting a long time for this movie. I had thought years ago that its time would come and even that Marc Anthony would be the lead...could never had imagined J-Lo, but hey, that's just gravy. YouTube has some good vintage stuff from Hector's early days with Willie Colon. I grew up listening to this stuff because of my parents and am passionate about the 70s salsa movement. Oigan ese pito!

I CAN NOT WAIT TO SEE THE STORY OF HECTOR LAVOE.
HE IS TRULLY THE BEST IN SALSA, AND I CAN'T THINK
OF A BETTER PERSON THAN MARC ANTHONY TO PLAY HIM.
I ALSO LOVE MARC ANTHONY TO ME HE IS THE #1 SALSERO
IN OUR ERA NOW. I LOVE ME MARC ANTHONY AND I BLESS HIS
AMAZING WAY OF SINGING.

I, like everyone else that I know of, cannot wait to see this movie. When is it finally going to come to the surface?

I am an avid fan of J-Lo and Mark, and am from the Hector Lavoe era. Saw Hector many times during his prime at some of the major salsa clubs in NY. I've been to several of Mark's concerts in Madison Square Garden and in Miami. As for J-Lo, love everything she's done. Great performer, actress, and all around classy lady. I know that in the public eye they like to have their privacy, which is good, but I would love to know what else is in the works for them.

As for EL CANTANTE, I feel it in my soul, this movie is going to be huge. Pleazzzzzse!!!! All you Latino's out their, especially the NuyorRicans, and my Jewish friends who during the Fania era were avid followers of Salsa. I ask you to support this movie once it comes out. Go see it more than once if you have to, and tell everyone the history behind it. I know I will.

Mark and J-Lo, thank you.

All my love.
Tillie/55 yrs young

I was fortunate enough to have taken part in this film. I am one of Hector's background vocalists in his band, willie colon's,and the fania. It was a wonderful experience and an honor for me to have had the opportunity. I hope the public comes out to support this film when it's released this summer at the end of July. Can't wait til it's finally out.

I can't wait for this movie to come out. If we want our stories to be told we have to tell them ourselves. Enough of waiting for the big studios to portrait us as hot tempered, sex driven, uneducated beings. We need to do our own thing, tell our own stories accurately, artfuly and respectfuly. Everyone should go and watch this movie. I know is a labor of LOVE for J-Lo and Marc and I'm proud that they, against all odds pulled it off...Latinos stand up...its about time that we start getting what is rightfuly ours in this country...Pa lante mi gente...MP, NYC, PR...

I have already read some movie reviews and they are not good. As usual Ms. Jennifer Lopez makes this movie all about herself and how many scenes she can show her face to the camera. I am still going to see the movie because I support anything that is Hector Lavoe. I hope I am not dissapointed!

The movie is out and I enjoyed it very much. My feet were dancing in my seat as I am of the era of Hector when he sang with Willie Colon. I still have the original albums of the Fania allstar so I went back in time. Marc Anthony deserves an award and Jennifer really showed her New York accent, well done

I saw the movie and loved it. Sad story! Such a great singer and idol for a lot of people and such a sad life behind it! Lived only 46 years and made history that will last forever!! Marc Anthony was the perfect person to act his life story and Jennifer did a great 'Puchi' I went with a different idea of what the movie was going to be and left with another....I recommend it and will buy it when it comes out on DVD. Thanks Marc & Jennifer!

i just wanted to start off by saying i give it to both of Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, they did a great job! my point of veiw is that what do they want that is how there life was. i am pretty shore that the first critics are the ones who gave a little here and there to make the movie.i dont belive that the wife had all to do with his drug abuse the music, money , and people around him who did not say, let me help and let him know he was big in this world. my hart goes out to them , REST IN PEACE PEREZ FAMILY! another problem is the movie might had not make so much money because i think that the promotion was not right and the movies i was in hold cap of 98 people i had to sit in front row with my mom and sisters. people sat in the stairs to see the movie. i want to thank you jlo and marc antony for making a great movie dont let them haters get to you guys. love always lazara

Another movie of a waste of a good Puerto Rican gone wild or is it mad. All I saw besides hearing good music was the rise and fall, addiction, and unfortunately early death due to Aids of someone who could of been a role model for Puerto Rican kids in the ghettos of New York and Puerto Rico. We seem to glorify the wrong people, and not the right thing. No Puerto Ricans allowed at J-Lo's Madre restaurant, by virtue of high prices that most Puerto Ricans can't afford to pay. No joda, dies peso por una tasa de cafe cuando en casa, si pasa por aya te la doy gratis con pan y queso.
C'mon J-Lo, we're behind you, pero let us into your restaurant, baja los precios, and don't worry about what people are going to say in Pasadena when they see our cacharras parked near your restaurant. Hector Lavoe could of received an honorary doctorate in the Science of Music from many colleges, due to the impact he had on up and coming salseros, pero ya saben lo que paso when you mix drugs, unprotected sex, with salsa. Has any Puerto Rican celebrity given to the local Puerto Rican Aids Society?
Marc, despierta, no te duerma, donate the profits of the El Cantante's movie sound track to goodwill, particurlarly Puerto Rican goodwill. Or are you and J-Lo living la vida de la JODEDERA sabiendo que ai hay chavo tambien. Me cago en die........

All I got to say is that, to those that critize marc j lo and the movie

are just haters!

by the way I'm peruvian and alot of us love salsa. i myself love hector

lavoe he is the king of kings of salsa he si9ng good salsa, baladas, you

name it anything he sang he made it the best.

The movie was really good. marc antony did a great job in acting,

although when he sang his voice was just marc anthony. what i'm trying to

say is that Hector's voice was way much better than marc's. if you

compare marc antony's singing voice in the movie with hector's original

records hector beats him big time. May be they wanted marc to sing

hector's music with his own style to make salsa more modern styled, i

don't now.finnaly, i just want to say i wish they would have used more

hector's real voice songs in the movie. also i wish they would have shot

a fania all stars concert were he sings 'el cantante' live, and after he

tried to kill himself i wish they would have shot the part when he

recovers and goes back to singing again and he quotes 'yo no me muero na'

before he started his concert.

This movie is going to be massive. I'm an african-american from Newark,nj. The city is basically all Blacks and Hispanics. I know his music from growing up in the 70's, Beautiful Music! The song El Cantante is one of my top 3 songs in my lifetime. Much Love to my Boricuas for producing such a voice in Hector LaVoe!
