Minnesota home boy Prince pens fight song for Vikings

Minneapolis’ favorite son Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, is a huge football fan.

Not just for any football team, but his home state team, Minnesota Vikings, who are down to the wire for the upcoming Super Bowl.

The NFL awarded the 2010 Super Bowl — Super Bowl XLIV — to the warm city of Miami and the championship game will be played February 7, 2010 at Dolphin Stadium. It is the 10th time the city, who last hosted in 2007, will play host to the championship event.

Now prolific songwriter Prince has unleashed his latest song, ‘Purple And Gold,’ as the new fight song for the Minnesota Vikings.

Prince claimed he “saw the future” after watching Brett Favre and the Viking boys shellac the Dallas Cowboys last weekend at the Metrodome, according to MyFoxTwinCities.com. That victory spurred his ode to the Vikings in the song ‘Purple and Gold.’

The song is a bit of a dirge and takes elements from traditional collegiate fight songs; here are the lyrics:

The veil of the sky draws open
The roar of the chariots touch down
We are the ones who have now come again
and walk upon water like solid ground
As we approach the throne we won’t bow down
This time we won’t b denied
