One thing American Idol proved the other night, singer and songwriter Smokey Robinson is still a damn fine looking man. Gracious too, as he smiled and clapped as several Idol contestants completely butchered his classic songs.
FOX juggernaut “American Idol” is down to nine contestants
The outstanding performers of the night were led by Adam Lambert, in a tip of the hat to either Elvis or KD Lang in his personal styling, not sure. He was completely brilliant in his revised version of “Tracks of My Tears.” This kid looks to be the possible winner of this season.
Allison Iraheta, Danny Gokey and Anoop Desai were really good too.
The ‘stinks on ice’ pile belonged to quirky Bohemian washing machine dancer Megan Corkrey and Michael Sarver who each turned in equally repulsive renditions of MoTown songs.
Sarver was the one who took the hit tonight.
The 27-year-old oil rig worker from Jasper, Texas, made his “Gospel” churched-up “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” but it didn’t “punch out the vocals” the way Smokey admonished the rigger to perform it in rehearsals.
When Paula Abdul can’t say anything nice, forget it.
It was Simon Cowell who delivered the news: “Michael, you’re going home. Sorry.”
Matt Giraud, 23, of Kalamazoo, Mich., was the next in line for low votes.
Portly Ruben Studdard performed, who poured sweat so badly during and after his vocal it was disconcerting. Then Stevie Wonder busted a medley of his songs. Smokey teamed up with Joss Stone for a duet.
The 69-year-old debuted “You’re the One for Me,” his duet with Joss Stone from his forthcoming record, “Time Flies When You’re Having Fun.”
Robinson recorded the song with Stone in New York last year. The ex Miracles singer also booked India.Arie and Carlos Santana to appear on other tracks too.
The nine contestants remaining are Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Anoop Desai, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen, Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud, Megan Corkrey and Scott MacIntyre.Note the date on this article may be incorrect due to importing it from our old system.
