London, UK: Michael Crawford will leave Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman in White temporarily due to illness. Michael Ball will take his place. Crawford has been unable to perform in the show recently because he has been fighting a flu virus. He is scheduled to return, after a break, on April 4th and stay until May 28th.
Michael Ball will take over the role of Count Fosco beginning February 22nd, though he may start earlier than that. Until then Crawford’s understudy will go on, unless Crawford feels up to any performances.
In a statement, Michael Ball said, “I am delighted to have been offered this opportunity. Stepping into the great Michael Crawford’s shoes represents an enormous challenge and I am thrilled to be working once again with Maria.”
Ball is one of Britians leading musical stars. Besides mounting immensly popular tours, he has starred as Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera, Alex in Aspects of Love, Georgio in Passion, and Marius in Les Miserables. Ball has appeared on three of the four major cast recording of Les Miserables.
