Rare royal spectacle to be staged in Bangkok
Bangkok (dpa) - Visitors to Thailand in October will be treated to one of the most impressive sights the country has to offer when a procession of royal barges is staged on the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok. In honour of King Bhumibol's 84th birthday in December, 52 barges will travel along the river from Vasukri Pier on October 22. The procession takes about two hours. From October 7 a series of eight rehearsals will be staged in preparation for the full event. General rehearsals with costumes will be held on October 13 and 18.
LA to mark artistic movements
Los Angeles (dpa) - Pacific Standard Time is the name given to a celebration of the art scene in Los Angeles that begins October 2 and runs until March 25 next year. The event is a collaboration of cultural institutes involving a series of readings, meetings, films and performances that highlight LA's art movements between 1945 and 1980. On the hunting trail in Liechtenstein
Triesenberg, Liechtenstein (dpa) - A special tour of Liechtenstein's historic hunting trails is taking place on October 1 that holidaymakers are invited to take part in. The tour takes about two hours and gives visitors the chance to follow the tracks of animals along trails that have been used by hunters for hundreds of years. Interested participants must register by sending an email to leander@leander.li by September 30 at the latest.
Exhibition of winter-themed art to open in Vienna
Vienna (dpa) - The Austrian capital's Kunsthistorisches Museum is staging an exhibition from October 18 to January 8, 2012 of European paintings depicting winter scenes. About 150 paintings will be on display in the Winter Tales exhibition ranging from late medieval works to contemporary pieces. Works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, William Turner, Caspar David Friedrich and Claude Monet will be on show. (www.khm.at/en)
Online Greenlandic audio phrase book
Copenhagen (dpa) - Greenland's tourist authority has set up a website that allows visitors to practice their language skills before they visit the country. Users can click on phrases and words and hear the proper pronunciation in Greenlandic. However, the tourist authority says anyone who finds it difficult to get to grips with the language will still be able to make themselves understood in English. Harvest and schnapps festival in Austria
Vienna (dpa) - The town of Wildschonau in Austria is celebrating a harvest festival on October 2 with a procession and a market with culinary delicacies. The festival marks the beginning of a week-long series of events that continue until October 8. The focus of activities will be the region's speciality mustard turnip schnapps. Many of the area's farms will be open to visitors looking to sample this delicacy.
