Hanging Lake declared a National Natural Landmark
Denver, Colorado (dpa) - Hanging Lake in the US state of Colorado is one of six sites declared as a new natural landmark. The lake, which is situated in Glenwood Canyon and is part of the White River National Forest, can only be reached via a 1.5-kilometre-long walking trail. New wooden walkways have been installed along the shoreline, while viewing platforms have also been erected for photographers and nature filmmakers. The US has 591 National Natural Landmarks, 13 of which can be found in Colorado. (www.colorado.com)
Special exhibition in Vienna showing works of Gustav Klimt
Vienna (dpa) - An exhibition displaying works of Gustav Klimt and architect Josef Hoffmann opens on October 25 in Vienna's Belvedere Museum. Titled 'Gustav Klimt / Josef Hoffmann, Pioneers of Modernism', the exhibition is one of several planned to mark the 150th anniversary of Klimt's birth. The exhibition runs until March 4, 2012, and includes Hoffman's design for Klimt's mausoleum, which was never commissioned. (www.belvedere.at)
Las Vegas hosts one-year celebration of beer
Las Vegas (dpa) - The world's only year-long beer festival begins on October 13 in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas World Beer Fest features 500 beers from 100 different breweries weekly and opens Thursday to Sunday from noon until 11 pm, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Only 5,000 entrance tickets will be issued each day to avoid overcrowding. (www.wbflv.com)
Memorial remembers witch burnings in Norway
Vardo, Norway (dpa) - A new monument has been erected in the Norwegian town of Vardo in memory of victims of witch trials carried out in the 17th century, says VisitNorway. The memorial is a collaboration between French artist Louise Bourgeois and Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. Vardo is where most witches in Norway were condemned and burned at the stake. The museum is lit by 91 light bulbs and 91 small windows, a reference to the 91 persons executed as witches between 1598 and 1692 in Finnmark, the vast majority of them in Vardo. The monument is also part of the 154km-long tourist route that runs along the coast. (www.turistveg.no)
Free gifts for tourists arriving in Taiwan on national holiday
Taiwan (dpa) - Tourists arriving in Taiwan by land or sea on October 10 this year will be given a free scratch card, according to the Taiwanese tourist office. Possible prizes include flight vouchers, hotel stays or electrical goods, with every tourist guaranteed a free gift. The promotion is part of Taiwan's national holiday celebrations as the country celebrates its 100th year of existence on this date.

Innsbruck, Austria (dpa) - A new website offers potential visitors the opportunity of viewing the Nordkette chain of mountains around Innsbruck before deciding whether to make the Austrian Alpine region the location for their holiday. The site shows detailed photographs of the area, while users can get information about catering possibilities, says the Innsbruck tourist office. The site's highlight is the Action Panorama, which shows downhill and mountainbike routes. (www.nordkette.com/panorama)
