Tourists abandon Croatian island after four-day water shortage

Zagreb - A water shortage which began four days ago on the island of Pag, on the Croatian Adriatic, has led to 60,000 tourists preparing to leave, Croatian media reported Wednesday. Others were being scared away from the island, where water began locally to disappear from taps and showers, eventually spreading to the entire island. The Croatian navy was expected to help replenish water supplies, but the first water-carrying ship was not expected before Thursday. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
