Amsterdam - Tourists looking for an original holiday destination can now experience life in the Middle Ages thanks to a Dutch theme park.
Archeon, located just north-east of The Hague, transports vacationers back to the fourteenth century. Guests in the recreated medieval town of Gravendam learn about life in the Middle Ages hands-on without any contemporary conveniences.
Assisted by the 'permanent inhabitants' of the little town, they are familiarized with their ancestors' way of life centuries ago. The temporary inhabitants of Gravendam are taught to cut wood, bake bread and prepare meals the traditional way. There is no running water, electricity or modern appliances. Only local vegetables, spices and meat are available.
People also take a break from contemporary fashion, dressing up in medieval attire, down to their shoes. Computers, mobile phones, mp3 players and cameras are also not permitted in the town which aims to recreate life in 1350.
The new holiday village in Archeon opened its doors to tourists on August 1. Previously, the historical theme park had merely offered day-trips to visitors. This service still continues. Unlike the guests who stay overnight in the theme park day-trippers continue to wear their own clothes and can take pictures of the town's 14th century inhabitants.
With battles between knights, medieval children's games, plenty of old-style playgrounds and nightly campfires, Archeon aims to attract families with young children.
Archeon's spokeswoman said the medieval holiday cottages are in high demand: hundreds of tourists have already signed up for what are just a handful of cabins.
Even though it lacks all contemporary conveniences, Gravendam holiday park comes at a price comparable with a luxury hotel in the Netherlands. Four people can spend a minimum of two days and one night in the park for 250 euros (353 dollars) including breakfast, or 320 euros including all meals.
The entrance fee for a day trip varies between 16.65 euros and 18.65 euros, depending on age. Children aged under four may enter for free.
