Did you know that December 13th is National Cocoa Day? Time to celebrate al the benefits of cocoa, not just the pop in your mouth kind.
Not only is cocoa a delicious treat, but is loaded with mouth watering beauty benefits that help us forgive the skin care sins of our past. From hydrating parched skin to preventing stretch marks and minimizing fine lines, this delicious ingredient certainly deserves a day of celebration.
The same plant that gives us chocolate also gives us cocoa butter a key ingredient in natural soaps, creams and lipsticks. The benefits of cocoa butter are of legend and science: It can penetrate the top layer of your skin, helping to keep all levels of skin hydrated. It heals and acts as a barrier.
It is beneficial for people who suffer from skin problems such as rosacea, dermatitis, eczema and very dry skin, it can help soothe a baby’s sore bottom.
Many people find it works for fading stretch marks. You do have to massage it into your skin at least once or twice a day before you will see any results.
The overall health benefits of cocoa butter make it great for inside and outside your body.
In honor of National Cocoa Day, here are some of the best new-to-market cocoa-infused beauty products that will make your skin crave a second serving:
suki® Butter Cream Healing Salve
“Magic in a jar.” If I worked for suki, this product name would change. Arnica infused cocoa butter heals and penetrated the worst flayed and red skin. Heal dry, chapped and uncomfortably stiff skin with this therapeutic botanical balm, alleviating eczema, rashes, and other inconvenient skin conditions. Mega fabulous spot cure-all, and can be used by everyone in the house. $27.95
jane iredale In Touch® Cream Blush
Sweep this tiny (image is much larger than actual product, .14 oz) and powerfully dense in pigment stick across cheeks for instant color. Like all of Iredale’s amazing products, this natural sweep of cocoa butter enhanced color that dries to a powder blends beautifully. The fragrance is pure cocoa powder. Try it on your lips as a stain too. Retails at $27.00
Jane Iredale Chocoholicks
This made in the USA compact holds four velvet rich chocolate-y shades needed to create a range of day and night looks. Iredale’s glosses are drier and not sticky whatsoever and have a cooling feel on the mouth.
It’s housed in a sleeved, slim palette for optimal portability with a retractable gold lip brush to ensure precise application and clean storage. Four shades are as follows:
Blood Orange is a velvet-y copper gloss pairing the flavors of deep, dark chocolate and zingy blood orange.
Espresso is a deep rich brown gloss tasting of bold, smooth mocha.
Very Berry is a sheer plum gloss and tastes of berries dipped in chocolate.
Chili Pepper is a wearable red gloss combining sweetness and spice with the flavors of dark chocolate-infused with exotic chilies. Tingles!
There is a caveat with the brush that comes with it, as I broke mine in the first use trying to retract it. Luckily there is enough room for me to put my favorite lip brush in its spot. Not cheap, but a lovely luxury lip wardrobe of perfect fall/winter colors and feel for $35.00
Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Lip Butters
A super affordable cocoa delight: The new two lip butters by Palmer’s: Dark Chocolate and Cherry and Dark Chocolate and Peppermint, under $3 and work like a charm for winter lips.
The scent and flavor are rich and decadent, so much so that my labrador stole one of the tubes out of my purse and chewed it for a moment until I fished it out of his mouth. When I squeezed the tube it all came out in tiny holes up and down the length of the tube. So you are warned, keep it away from animals.
This product definitely exceeded my expectations. You simply squeeze the amount of lip butter you need and apply with the angled tip. A tiny amount is needed, as it’s got the consistency of a dense, super moisturizing lip gloss more than a lip balm.
