May 8, 2010, 18:20 GMT
Washington - Isabella became for the first time the most popular name for baby girls in the United States, while the name of one of President Barack Obama's daughters rose quickly up the naming list, US government data showed Friday.
Jacob topped the chart for boys in 2009 for the 11th year running, according to annual statistics by the Social Security Administration, the US pension system which charts names through enrollment records of newborns.
The fastest rising name for girls was Maliyah, an alternate spelling of Malia - Obama's oldest daughter, which rose nearly 300 places to 296th among the 1,000 most popular names in 2009. The name remains much more popular than Barack, with just 69 boys named for the president last year.
The fastest rising boy's name was Cullen, likely a nod to the character Edward Cullen in the popular Twilight novels and films.
New names among the 10 favourites were Mia (10) for girls and Jayden (8) and Noah (9) for boys.
