New Zealand retailers say Chinese clothes safe

Wellington - New Zealand retailers say independent tests have proved that Chinese-made clothing poses no risk to health, it was reported on Tuesday. The Retailers' Association said the tests refuted claims by a TV3 consumer affairs programme last month that children's clothes made in China contained dangerous levels of formaldehyde, a chemical widely used to produce a permanent-press effect. Association chief executive John Albertson said the programme's testing was not based on accepted international standards. New Zealand's Ministry of Consumer Affairs is conducting its own tests but the results are not yet known. Meanwhile, the ministry has advised that all new clothing, particularly garments claimed to be anti-wrinkle or permanent pressed, should be washed and aired before being worn for the first time. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
