Variety of medications available to ease restless leg syndrome

Neu-Isenburg, Germany Patients suffering from restless leg syndrome can turn to a variety of medicines, the Neu-Isenburg-based Aerzte Zeitung reported recently. Restless leg syndrome is a chronic disorder characterized by a strong prickling sensation in the legs, which disrupts sleep and impairs the quality of life. Drugs called dopamine agonists can help in the long run, according to Professor Claudia Trenkwalder in Kassel. But neurologist Karin Stiasny-Kolster in Marburg warns against taking too much medication, which can cause the drugs to lose effectiveness and prolong the symptoms. Jogging, leg massages and cold showers can also help control the syndrome, she says. Only about a third of sufferers actually need medicine. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
