Bonn, Germany An advice brochure published by the German Skin and Allergy association advises against bathing babies for longer than five or seven minutes at a time.
The water should be no warmer than 37 degrees Celsius to protect their sensitive skin. A daily cleansing routine for babies is best done with a soft washcloth.
Babies do not however have to have a bath every day. Once or twice a week is enough to fulfil their hygiene requirements.
To prevent chafing, gently but thoroughly dry the baby's skin after bathing.
Make sure their bottoms are dry as moisture and warmth provide the right environment for bacteria to grow.
Baby skin is very susceptible to infection as it has not fully developed an immune mechanism.
Creams and lotions can sooth and regenerate baby skin and help prevent it from drying out.
Choose a cream that does not contain synthetic aromas, colours or preservatives so their skin is not irritated.
Lotions based on plant oils are healthier than creams that contain mineral oils.
