Don't leave medicine in cars during summer months

Marburg, Germany Medications left in a vehicle on a hot day can lose their effectiveness according to the German Green Cross, an independent organisation that promotes health matters. 'Generally speaking, drugs should be stored at temperatures of a maximum of 20 degrees Celsius,' says the pharmacist, Irene von Majewski. 'Parking a car in the sun can cause the interior to become extremely hot. Suppositories and capsules can get very soft,' she explains. Their casings are designed to melt at body temperature. Medicinal sprays can also lose their power. Heat can cause propellants to be released that change the spray's dosage. Medicines are best transported in cars on hot days in cool boxes. 'Use a piece of cardboard in bags with cooling elements to separate the medication from the cold surface otherwise the low temperature could damage the drug,' says Majewski. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
