Healthy eating reduces risk of diabetes in pregnancy
Jun 5, 2006, 12:28 GMT
Hamburg - A healthy diet reduces the risk of diabetes arising during pregnancy, a problem that occurs in 5 to 10 per cent of pregnant women, a major German health insurance company said.
The cause of diabetes during pregnancy is not known. Between 70 and 80 per cent of women who contract diabetes while pregnant are able to get their blood sugar level under control through diet, said DAK. Eating wholewheat bread, fruit and vegetables reduces the risk of contracting the disease.
One of the results of diabetes during pregnancy is the fetus develops too rapidly and becomes too big. This can cause aberrations in the lungs and placenta. DAK also noted that the condition often is recognized too late or not at all.
