Asthma sufferers often do not have illness under control
May 15, 2006, 7:29 GMT
Augsburg - Asthma patients often suffer unnecessarily from their illness, Germany's association for pneumologists said.
The chairman of the association said about 60 per cent of asthmatics do not have their illness adequately under control. Chairman Andreas Hellmann of the lung centre in Augsburg said some of them do not take their medicines as prescribed.
A new test that asks patients to describe their asthma symptoms over the preceding four weeks should help them get their illness under control.
Asthma is not curable, but there are medicines available that can help every asthmatic person either eliminate the discomfort caused by the illness or ensure that they seldom suffer symptoms, Hellman said.
Patients, who have found the optimal medication or combination of medications, awaken neither overnight nor mornings with coughing. They require no additional medication and are not restricted in their jobs or while participating in sports.
