Sun rays support the generation of vitamin D

Bonn - A few minutes of sunshine every week supports the body's own production of vitamin D, the German Society for Nutrition said.
During the summer months, five to 15 minutes of sunshine on the face, hands and arms three times a week is sufficient for the body to generate vitamin D, the Bonn-based organization said. The vitamin is produced in the skin under the influence of UV-B rays.
Vitamin D regulates the metabolism of calcium and phosphate and promotes the building and maintenance of bones. Vitamin D is also found in milk, herring, mackerel, salmon, tuna, liver, eggs, margarine and mushrooms.
