Health care tips for scuba divers
May 8, 2006, 13:30 GMT
Neu-Isenburg, Germany One of the minor risks associated with scuba diving are ear infections.
Prolonged contact with water can lead to moisture penetrating the ear canal and possible infection from bacteria.
The result is otitis externa the medical term for an earache, according to an article published in the German medical journal Aerzte Zeitung.
Seawater can also destroy the protective layer of wax in the ear.
Aerzte Zeitung recommends rinsing the ears with fresh water after every dive.
Another preventative measure is to use a combination of alcohol and white vinegar known as 'divers ear drops' which prevents bacterial growth.
