Endometriosis a factor in fertility

May 8, 2006, 13:30 GMT

Sydney - Endometriosis, a disease linked to the womb, is not just responsible for irregular periods, upset bowel or bladder infections but can sometimes cause infertility.

An Australian study has found that 40 per cent of women who seek treatment for infertility are suffering from endometriosis - and may have had the poorly understood disease since their teenage years.

A study of 1,000 women by the University of Canberra and Canberra Hospital also found nearly half of all teenage girls suffer from endometriosis, where the inside lining the cavity of the uterus is found elsewhere in the pelvis or abdomen.

Melissa Parker, who led the research team, said most sufferers are not diagnosed for six to 10 years because endometriosis is easily confused with other conditions.

'In the long-term there certainly is a problem with infertility from endometriosis,' she said. 'So for those women seeking fertility assistance, 40 per cent of those women have endometriosis.'
