Many salon shampoos can cause allergic reactions
Jan 30, 2006, 5:32 GMT
Frankfurt - Expensive shampoos used and sold at hair salons can cause allergic reactions, and a test of 26 shampoos sold at salons showed that seven contained halogen organic compounds, the January edition of the German magazine Oeko-Test reported.
The compounds not only can cause allergic reactions, but are also linked to cancer, the report said. The magazine also reported that perfumes found in six of the shampoos could cause allergic reactions.
Diethylphthalate, which can affect the natural protection mechanisms of the skin, was detected in 11 of the products. A single wash with the shampoo containing the substance was not necessarily damaging. But consumers should not buy the product and use it regularly, Oeko-Test advised.
None of the salon shampoos received a 'very good' rating in the test. Ten of the 26 shampoos were rated inadequate, and three were rated defective. In an earlier test of shampoos sold in drug stores and supermarkets, four products were found to be of unacceptable quality.
