The Best in Holiday 2012 Gift Finds is an ongoing series until December that celebrates the practical to the extravagant, the unusual to the commonly needed items of everyday life.

From food, wine and spirits to beauty, clothing and even home goods and appliances, we have been trying and testing and ultimately weeding out the good stuff you should consider for giving this holiday season. Take us shopping with you.

We fell in love with a new retro-styled handset inspired by the iconic 1950s Bakelite-style telephone plugs that directly into most phones and computers (you can check adaptability on their website, some phones may need a special jack) to facilitate chatting via Skype, FaceTime, Google Talk and other web-based communicators.

The handset has nice heft, not too heavy but feels good, and fitted with a high-quality speaker and microphone along with noise-reduction technology.

Why we love it:

This simple cool device has turned my laptop into a real phone - no more weird echoes on Skype and it's brilliant for interviews. Clarity like a land line and keeps cell phones away from your head, plus it's a lot of fun to use.

Caveat: May require adaptor with some phones, and these are sold separately. The 3.5mm jack accommodates iPhones and most smartphones.  And it eliminates over 99% of absorbed phone radiation for the health conscious out there. Made of Silicone/metal.

The old-fashioned phone set is great for those of us who miss the phones of our youth, and the better sound reception than headsets provide.  The POP phone is an old-school styled gadget that has you chatting away on a handheld phone just like mom and pop used to.

The range of colors are amazing. I use the Bloody Mary red, but you can order it in neon green, platinum gold to pink.

Crack people up, avoid brain cancer and relive the olden days when phones had to be answered with the handset. Great gift that works brilliantly for under $30.
