Right this very second as I type, I am swishing a heaping tablespoon of Carrington Pure Unrefined Cold Pressed Coconut oil (looks like an anemic Crisco when you open the tub) in my mouth for an experiment.
I read up about an ancient Ayurvedic practice called Kavala Gandoosha (or Kavala Graha). Indians used sesame oil ( or sunflower or coconut oil) to clean their mouths. The lauric acid in the oil is shown to have anti-bacterial properties (anti-fungal and anti-viral, as well) which reduce the bacteria (mostly strep) in the mouth. Bloggers like Design Mom chronicled their adventure and really liked it. I love my teeth, and I was curious.
20 minutes. Having the oil (which immediately liquefied) in my mouth swishing was far less unpleasant than it appears it might be on paper. I cannot wait to spit it out- as having anything in your mouth 20 minutes is tedious (ahem).
Which brings us to another use for this miracle oil: Personal lubricant. I cannot attest to this but actress Miranda Kerr can.
Miranda Kerr recently stated,
“I think everyone should have coconut oil for more reasons than one. You can use it in your hair, you can use it as a makeup remover, you can cook with it, you can use it in the bedroom! Um… [Laughs]
You can though—it’s quite versatile, that coconut oil! [Laughs] You know, now I really need to do a coconut oil campaign in which I talk about all of this. That would be funny, right?
Let’s start by not burying the lead in this coconut oil story, the stuff is amazingly versatile and it’s CHEAP!
Extra Virgin Coconut Oil seems to be the latest item appearing in all celebrities’ pantries and vanities alike. Sarah Jessica Parker, Blake Lively, Miranda Kerr and Angelina Jolie are just a few stars that can’t live without this “must-have” ingredient for their beauty needs. Coconut Oil is known for being a heart-healthy food with anti-aging properties and all the leading ladies in Hollywood are using it.
Coconut oil is made up of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA). These fatty acids do not have a negative on cholesterol. They are known to lower the risk of heart disease. The liver and gall bladder do not need to digest and emulsify MCFA, resulting in instant energy, increased metabolic rate and subsequently more heat production and increased circulation.
Blake Lively is sold on all of this too, and also shared, “she puts coconut oil on the ends of her hair” since when you shampoo your hair, it removes oil from your roots but you want the rest of your hair to maintain moisture.
So, as I swish coconut oil and watch the clock, lets review some uses:
Coconut oil can be used as a natural alternative to hair conditioner, but it must be applied before washing hair, and coconut oil can be applied after shampooing once the hair is dried by applying a small amount to your palms and distributing it evenly from mid-length to ends. SMALL amount being key.
Coconut oil is highly recommended for those dealing with a dry, itchy scalp, especially during the winter months. Apply it directly to the scalp only and massage for 15 minutes before rinsing.
Massage Oil. Safe, edible, natural. Coconut oil soothes tired and sore muscles
Lip Balm – Coconut oil hydrates and protects lips. It can also offer protection from the sun (about SPF 4)
Lubricant – See Miranda Kerr’s recommendations. Coconut oil makes an all-natural personal lubricant for intimate moments without the chemicals. Need more be said…
Moisturizer: Coconut oil is an excellent way to soften and hydrate dry, rough or damaged skin AND I love it for overnight foot treatments-slather on feet and sock them up, wake up with soft heels.
Bargain Face Wash/Scrub: Mix coconut oil with baking soda, sugar, or cinnamon and oatmeal for the perfect face scrub and exfoliator. You can customize the scrub by mixing it and adding ingredients slowly to the right consistency.
Makeup Remover- Forget Abilene or Noxema, yuck. Coconut oil removes oil-based makeup easily, like mascara. It cleans, hydrates and makes skin glow
Shave your legs – Use in place of foams and gels. Skin-soothing properties will leave your legs looking hydrated
Teeth Cleaning · A spoonful of coconut oil can clean your teeth more thoroughly than brushing, flossing, and gargling with antiseptic mouthwash. Oil pulling is a technique to clean your teeth and mouth. You put a spoonful of oil in your mouth, then swish it around for 20 minutes. Then you spit it out in the trash, not the sink!
Okay I just spit it all out. Interesting results. Not bad, teeth feel cleaner and stronger…that’s a weird outcome but truthful. I will do this again. The taste was neutral slightly coconut but nothing like I expected.
I used Carrington Farms – both the Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (MSRP: 12oz/$7.99) and the Liquid Coconut Cooking Oil (MSRP: $7.98) are under $10.00. These are great swaps for expensive store-bought beauty products.
Plus, you can use the Coconut Oil as a healthy and delicious replacement for butter or fat, when sauteing vegetables, roasting sweet potatoes, and even in baked goods when cooking.
