VW introduces modular production
Feb 15, 2012, 3:06 GMT
Wolfsburg, Germany - The Volkswagen Group has announced that it will be introducing the MQB modular production process for the Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and SEAT brands with traverse-mounted engines.
The so-called Modular Transverse Matrix standardises many vehicle component parameters which makes it theoretically possible to produce all the Polo, Beetle, Golf, Scirocco, Jetta, Tiguan, Touran, Sharan, Passat and Volkswagen CC models on the same assembly line.
The first new vehicles to be produced based on the MQB will be the successor to the Audi A3 and the next generation Golf, the VW group announced.
In addition to standardising conventional internal combustion engines, the MQB also enables an identical mounting position for all current alternative drive concepts including natural gas, hybrid and electric drive.
