Hamburg - Motorists are advised to regularly check the oil level of their vehicle even if the car is relatively new as consumption can differ considerably depending on the size of the engine and driving habits.
Driving your car below the minimum oil level adds to wear-and-tear and can even cause a complete engine breakdown, but topping up the oil over the maximum level can also result in costly repairs. Here are some tips:
Check the oil level at least once a month and before a long trip.
Be sure the engine has been switched off for five to ten minutes before you check the oil as it needs some time to run back into the oil pan. The best time to check the oil isn the morning before you start your trip.
Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean and then insert it again. If it reaches the 'add' level you need to add oil.
Take care that you don't fill up too much oil over the 'Full' level as this could damage the catalytic converter.
Check the owner's manual for the expected oil consumption. Some cars have a consumption of up to half a litre per 1,000 kilometres and more. If the consumption is well above the recommended level then you need to have the car checked.
