VW sets target for cleaner production
Jan 11, 2012, 3:06 GMT
Wolfsburg, Germany - Volkswagen has set itself a target of reducing by 25 per cent the environmental impact of its car production by 2018, taking into consideration energy consumption, waste volumes, water consumption as well as airborne and carbon dioxide emissions.
'Sustainable, efficient production is a clear competitive advantage,' said Werner Neubauer, a member of the board of management of the Volkswagen brand.
Launched under the slogan 'Think Blue. Factory,' the brand is pursuing a strategy pooling all environmental activities at plants throughout the world and making improvements to production processes.
The carmaker has recently come under criticism by the Greenpeace environmental movement for its environmental record. Greenpeace accuses VW of being what it calls 'at the heart' of the ACEA lobby group lobbying against a European emission target of 95 grammes per kilometre.
