US investigating rust problem in older GM and Ford vans

Jan 4, 2012, 3:06 GMT

Washington - The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a rust problem in vans made by General Motors and Ford after complaints from owners, the authority has announced.

The authority is investigating 17,000 Chevrolet Express vans built in 2003 and 63,000 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey vans built around 2004.

According to the announcement, the investigation on the Express vans revolves around a fuel filter pipe which may rust and leak fuel. The fuel filter pipe on the Express is located farther back than on vans not equipped with a left side passenger door. The fuel pipe runs through the rear wheel well, which is exposed to road debris and water spray from the rear tyre.

In the Ford investigation, the NHTSA said it has received seven complaints from owners of Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey vans where the rear wheel wells were so badly corroded that, in some cases, anchor mounts for the third row seat belts had become completely detached from the car.
