Be careful with distance controls on icy roads
Jan 4, 2012, 3:06 GMT
Munich - Motorists on icy roads should avoid using the automatic distance control fitted into many modern cars, as the system is unable to recognize bad weather conditions, Germany's automobile association ADAC has warned.
Arnulf Thiemel, technical expert with the German motoring organization ADAC, says distance controls of many systems make provision for a relatively close driving distance to the car in front. However, the braking distance on icy roads is significantly higher than the norm.
'On snowy and icy roads the driver should always take over and be gentle on the accelerator,' Thiemel said.
An automatic distance control is normally fitted with a camera that monitors the distance to the car in front, automatically regulating the speed and distance to the car in front.
