Toyota launches first compact hybrid in domestic market
Jan 4, 2012, 3:06 GMT
Tokyo - Toyota has launched the first small hybrid vehicle in its domestic market under the label Toyota Aqua. The car will later be launched on other world markets as the Prius C, it was announced at a press conference in Tokyo.
The Aqua is fitted with a 1.5-litre engine with an output of 72 horsepower (hp) supported by a 60 hp electric engine fed by a nickel-metal hydride battery.
Toyota lists consumption of the Aqua at about 2.8 litres per 100 kilometres, which is about 8.5 per cent more fuel efficient than the larger Prius. Acceleration from zero to 100 kilometres per hour is listed at 10.7 seconds.
Among the standard items for the Aqua are anti-locking brakes (ABS), an electronic stability programme (ESP), air conditioning and heated seats. Options include a six-speaker stereo system and a more advanced instrument panel.
The entry model Aqua will sell in Japan at 1.69 million yen (21,600 dollars). It is unclear when Toyota is planning to launch the car in other markets.
