Some tips for good winter driving

Munich - Sub-zero temperatures with ice and snow pose many a challenge for the motorist. But, with a few good tips, you can have the car nicely cosy and warm, according to experts.
'Motorists should consult the handbook on how to adjust the heating system,' says Arnulf Thiemel from the German auto mobile association ADAC.
Most modern cars have a heating system that soon clears ice and fog from the windows and brings the temperature in the car to a comfortable level. Some cars have a defrost function, but motorists need to check the handbook, as improper use could harm the system, Thiemel warns.
Turning the heater on to its maximum right at the start could bring too much heat into the interior, leaving the engine with not enough time and energy to achieve normal operation, according to the expert.
After the defrost has fulfilled its function, the temperature should be regulated to a normal level. A comfortable temperature could be slightly higher in the car than in an apartment because the large window surfaces reflect the cold onto the occupants.
Sven Rademacher of the German road safety council (DVR) warns that motorists could become drowsy if temperatures are too high, especially in the mornings. Experts recommend an ideal range of between 20 and 21 degrees Celsius for the interior of a car.
Rademacher also warns motorists against wearing thick winter jackets in the car, because the safety belt function could be impeded.
