VW reveals "reinvention" of the delivery vehicle
Nov 30, 2011, 3:06 GMT
Potsdam, Germany - Volkswagen has unveiled an eT research vehicle that could revolutionise 'the delivery vehicle,' following the delivery person from house to house or returning to the delivery person on command.
Working with the German Deutsche Post postal services and researchers at the University of Art in Braunschweig, a VW research team formed a think-tank on future transport and mobility needs.
'We analysed process flows and customer needs in detail, and from these analyses we derived ideas on how the segment of delivery and courier vehicles could be further developed over the long-term,' said Juergen Leohold, director of VW Group Research.
The eT! research vehicle can be driven semi-automatically and electrically in downtown areas, transferring to E-mobility for commercial use, the car maker says.
Fitted with electric hub motors, the eT has optimal utilisation of space. Apart from 'Follow me' and 'Come to me' commands the driver can direct the car's movements via a 'drive stick' from the passenger's side that also offers a standing seat and quick access to the vehicle.
On the passenger's side - the side facing the sidewalk - an electrically opening sliding door opens to two different stages, enabling quick entry into the vehicle as well as quick access to the mail parcels. Unnecessary walking movements around the vehicle are a thing of the past.
