Super lightweight Mercedes E-Class expected in 2015
Nov 16, 2011, 3:06 GMT
Stuttgart - Mercedes is working on a super lightweight E-Class carbon fibre model that could be on the road in 2015 powered by a 50 hp electric motor and a 150 hp hydrogen engine, the German Autobild newspaper reports.
The lightweight E-Class would have a weight of 1,300 kilogrammes, some 350 kilogrammes lighter than the current model, according to the report.
Usage of rigid carbon fibre, which is much harder than steel, allows engineers and designers to do without the B-pillar, giving the E-Class extravagant sliding doors.
Apart from the E Superlight, Mercedes has two other carbon fibre model in the pipeline, named B clever and SCS, the newspaper reports.
