Child seat crash test shows alarming results
Oct 26, 2011, 3:06 GMT
Stuttgart - A recent crash test has provided an alarming result for some child seats on the market with four of the nine gadgets tested revealing malfunctions despite complying with all current European product specifications.
In the most dramatic case, the Isofix fastening straps of one seat gave way in a crash at a speed of 51 kilometres per hour with the seat being catapulted forward through the windscreen.
All the seats tested complied with the current ECE R44 European safety specifications, the testers pointed out, warning that such specifications were only a required legal minimum with consumers advised to check out independent product tests.
The test, conducted jointly by Germany's auto-motor-sport magazine and the country's technical testing authority TueV, provided only a 'recommendation' label for the five other seats.
'The test result reveals that some manufacturers might be developing their product exactly according to the ECE R44 norm but that much more needs to be done for the safety of children,' TUeV expert Dr. Lother Wech said.
