Paris launches electric vehicle share programme
Oct 12, 2011, 3:06 GMT
Paris - Paris has launched an electric vehicle share programme supported by billionaire investor Vincent Bollore and the mayor of the French city Bertrand Delanoe.
The programme, which will initially run for a two-month trial period, is based on the successful Velib bicycle sharing scheme. Members pay an annual fee of 144 euros (192 dollars) to participate in the Autolib programme. The first half hour of usage costs an additional five euros with the price staggered according to the period the vehicle is used for.
The vehicles will be available from 33 charging stations. Each car can travel around 250 kilometres before needing a recharge.
For the trial period some 60 vehicles are taking part in the programme with the number of cars to be increased to around 250 by the end of the year. The initiators of Autolib plan to widen the project to about 46 regions throughout France by the middle of next year.
