Siemens extends electric car sharing scheme for employees
Sep 21, 2011, 3:06 GMT
Berlin - Siemens has extended an electric car sharing scheme for its employees in Berlin to gather more information on battery usage and charging stations in the city, according to the head of the division for logistics and mobility Sami Atiya.
Twelve Opel Agila electric vehicles have been fitted with onboard computers indicating the condition of the battery, its range and how long the car has been reserved. A central station monitors the vehicle and tells the driver where he/she can find the next free parking space or electric charging station. The rental, parking and charging fees are automatically calculated.
'The idea of the project is to find ways of making mobility in cities significantly more efficient and eco-friendlier,' according to Atiya. The electric vehicles will in future become part of a transportation system linked to the underground railway system, bus and tram.
