Sound test for electric cars
Jul 13, 2011, 4:06 GMT
Bremen, Germany - A test conducted by Germany's Fraunhofer-Institute has revealed that blind people can easily overhear the silent swoosh of an electric car but that this also applied to cars fitted with silent combustion engines.
The test was conducted with 40 blind or almost blind people in the northern German city of Bremen with some of the blind people hearing the E-cars coming in the same way as normal cars in relatively quiet areas.
The situation was however different in dense traffic situations with trucks or buses easily drowning the noise of approaching E-vehicles. Electric cars were also difficult to hear when they travelled at low speeds or when normal cars joined in.
Campaigners for the disabled and the blind have recently stepped up demands for E-Cars to be fitted with noise boosters to make them safer for pedestrians.
