Poor safety for rear seat passengers, crash test finds
Jun 29, 2011, 3:06 GMT
Munich - Rear seat passengers have a distinct disadvantage in a car accident with occupants of small cars and vans facing great risk of serious injury or death, according to crash tests conducted by the German automobile association ADAC.
Small vehicles and vans lacked the crash zone behind the passengers that normally take up most of the impact in a rear end collision. While front seat passengers were mostly surrounded and protected by air bags this was not the case for rear seat passengers in many cars, the test found.
Rear seat passengers were often only protected by a safety belt, which were not of the same quality as those for front occupants. Headrests for rear seat passengers were also too inflexible with too big a space to the head.
While adults were most in danger when sitting in the rear, small children fastened in a child seat were fairly safe at the back, the ADAC found.
