Munich - BMW has launched the fifth generation of the high-performance M5, combining racetrack capabilities with the practicality of a luxury business saloon with numerous driver assistance systems and infotainment functions.
The 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo package has an output of 412 kW/560 hp at 6,000-7,000 rpm. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/hr is in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 305 km/hr.
Average fuel consumption is listed at 9.9 litres/100 kilometres, which is a 30-per-cent improvement on the predecessor model, according to the car maker.
Handling and traction is improved with an Active M Differential and an electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential for fully variable distribution of drive between the rear wheels.
Design features contributing to performance characteristics include a front apron with extremely large air intakes for the engine and brake. A gurney-style rear spoiler can be found on the boot lid with 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in exclusive double-spoke design.
Among the driver assistance systems is an M-specific Head-Up Display, Adaptive Headlights for standard xenon light, High-Beam Assistant, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, Lane Change Warning System, Lane Departure Warning System, Surround View, Speed Limit Info, internet usage and an extended integration of smartphones and music players.
