BMW planning to unveil electric i3 at Frankfurt Show
Jun 22, 2011, 3:06 GMT
Munich - BMW is planning to unveil for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September the electric i3 that is expected to be on offer in European showrooms by the middle of 2013, according to a report in Germany's Autobild newspaper.
Quoting sources close to the BMW i3 project, the paper said the EV would feature an ultralight carbon fibre body and would also be available as a plug-in-Hybrid. The range extender would be a two-cylinder engine supplying the batteries with energy during driving.
BMW is keeping very quiet on the price, but Autobild said it would likely be up to 50,000 euros (71,000 dollars) because the company was not planning to subsidize the project.
The first appearance on public roads for the i3 is scheduled for the Olympic Games in London starting on July 27th next year when a fleet of the cars would be made available, the report said.
